Rueben's Ramblings

A Look at the Fall Programming

By  |

Last week the major networks made their upfront presentations to advertisers in New York City, announcing their plans for their fall programming. There were surprises from each network with cancellations of shows, renewals for a number of “on the bubble” series and pick-ups on new programs.

Chuck

As I have mentioned before, I am a fan of dramas so I was paying close attention to each networks planned line-up closely. I was very pleased when, for once, NBC made the right decision in renewing Chuck for another season while allowing Heroes to rest in peace. It was also terrific to learn that the CW took a chance on Life Unexpected despite their poor choices in keeping One Tree Hill and 90210 on the air. And, of course, I am eager to see what will happen next on Castle since the network gave it an early pick-up.

No Ordinary Family

I am excited about the new ABC series No Ordinary Family, starring Michael Chiklis, Julie Benz, Tate Donovan and Autumn Reeser. I am anxious to see the pilots of the new NBC series Undercovers, which comes from the mind of J.J. Abrams (the man behind Lost, Alias and Felicity) as well as the introduction of Nikita on the CW. I also want to see the CBS remake of Hawaii Five-O, hoping the show will not only do justice to its classic predecessor but also be the lucky charm for its star Alex O’Loughlin, who has had several other series failures on the network.

Undercovers

As is typical for me, I will watch all of the new dramas on all of the major networks, making a decision on each one based on their overall appeal, the casting choices and, most important of all, the writing. There could surprise winners and unexpected losers; but that is standard for each TV season. The true test will be if viewers come back to returning favorites as well as tuning in to the new shows. With so many options available to the viewing audience, and the rampant viewer erosion, it is anyone’s guess on what shows will succeed and which ones will fail. I will definitely be along for the ride as I wouldn’t have it any other way.

How about you? Which shows were you happy to hear got renewed? Which new series are you anxious to see? And, do you have any predictions on which shows will not be long for the TV-world? NGTV would love to hear what you have to say.

PS: I want to wish all of our readers a very happy and fun Memorial Day. Be safe, enjoy the weekend with your family and friends, but please don’t drink and drive.

One Ring by Elisa Wilfong

Artists Spotlight: This month’s artist spotlight is on Elisa Wilfong, who specializes in realistic pencil or graphite art as well as multimedia graphic design and comics. She has been drawing since she was a child, developing an appreciation and skill level with pencils and paints over the years. Elisa is primarily a self-taught artist, having taken no formal instruction other than her own exploration in artistic styles and using instruction books. She draws movie scenes as well as memorabilia, fantasy, wildlife and pets. Over the years she has sold her pencil art to individual clients and has started her own pet portrait business. Along the way she has won art contests and shows her art regularly at local fairs and comic book conventions. In addition to the pencil art, she is a self-taught graphic artist working in Photo Shop and Illustrator. She also works part-time as a graphic artist and dabbles in comics. In fact she has her own web-comic called “Imp” that is updated bi-weekly (on Tuesdays and Thursdays). Her inspiration to be an artist came from observing nature as a young child, following birds and cats in her backyard. This experience infused her desire to become a better artist, to improve her skills and reproduce everything she saw accurately. The artists who inspired her as a child were Frank Frazetta and Boris Vallejo. You can contact Elisa at: ewportfolio@yahoo.com. You can visit her main art site at: www.elisawilfong.com, her pet portrait work at: www.pencilmypet.com or her web-comic at: www.impcomic.com. Her featured piece is called One Ring.

Using her favorite online handle, Rueben is an East Coast-bred gal who is now a permanent Californian and a lifelong tv-oholic. She watches at least 25 TV shows a week, goes to the movies as often as possible, listens to music every waking moment, reads every day and “plays” on the internet every chance she can. Some of her current favorite TV shows are Outlander, Sweet Magnolias, Wednesday, The Mandalorian, The Equalizer, Fire Country, Miss Scarlet, Hudson & Rex, SkyMed, The Rookie, Cobra Kai, Virgin River, The Witcher, Leverage: Redemption and School Spirits. She is looking forward to the long-awaited return of Bridgerton, is curious about the debut of Orphan Black: Echoes and the 3rd and final season of Sweet Tooth coming in June.
