Rueben's Ramblings
Music That Makes the TV World Go Round
Whether you only listen to music on occasion, have it playing in the car on long trips or, like me, can’t really get through the day without it playing (nearly) all the time, there are certain songs that mean something to you, remind you of a special time in your life or move you to not only dance your socks off, but also sends a shiver up your spine.
Since I’m a massive music fan and love tunes ranging from the big band era of the 30’s and 40’s through the classics of the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s to today’s music, I have a wide array of songs in my collection (and it’s continually growing).
A great portion of the music I have are songs that were featured in TV shows that I have watched over the years. One of the networks that seems to specialize in featuring new artists through their programming is the CW (formerly the WB). With shows like Buffy, Angel, Roswell, Dawson’s Creek and One Tree Hill – just to name several – viewers have been introduced to countless new artists or been reminded of classic sounds.
As an example, the British singer Dido was unknown in America until her single “Here With Me” () was featured as the theme song to the series Roswell. The same can be said of the group Remy Zero whose song “Save Me” ( )was chosen as the theme for the long-running series Smallville. Until that time their only real claim to fame, except within limited circles, was the fact the lead singer was briefly married to Charmed actress Alyssa Milano.
The opposite can be said about the theme song for the long-running CBS drama CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, which has been “Who Are You” () by the classic band The Who. Jumping back to the CW for a brief moment, the series Supernatural features only classic songs from the 1970’s, which is an unwritten rule by series creator Eric Kripke.
The ABC series Grey’s Anatomy introduced viewers to the group Fray and many talented artists have been featured in series such as Ugly Betty, Brothers & Sisters and others. In fact, the network has created the ABC Music Lounge where you can find songs featured in their shows; the CW has also been doing something similar for a number of years.
With these thoughts in mind, and the fact there are so many talented, albeit unknown, artists out there whose songs could be featured in upcoming episodes of returning favorites not to mention many of the brand new series to debut in the fall, we here at NGTV would love to hear suggestions from our readers of songs and artists you would like to hear in your favorite shows.
Here is an example to start with: There is an artist by the name of Anouk whose song “Lost” () was featured in the reality series So You Think You Can Dance. This beautiful, haunting song could easily be featured in any series, but I would love to hear it on Smallville in a scene between Lois and Clark or on Grey’s Anatomy in a scene between Alex and Lizzie. There is also another song called “Beautiful is Gone” by The Ruse () that I think would fit really well with Gossip Girl or maybe even in the new series The Vampire Dairies. Now it’s your turn. Please suggest away…
