“The Vampire Diaries” Expected Second Season Renewal; “Supernatural” Sixth Season?

The CW announced that The Vampire Diaries will be back for a second season, but the surprise is that Supernatural will also return for season six.
While many Supernatural fans had hopes for another season, Eric Kripke had only signed up for five seasons. In fact, when Kripke was asked at last year’s Comic Con whether he would be open to a sixth, he wasn’t sure but didn’t seem very interested either. It could be that he was well into this current season to think much about what lies ahead. As it is, Kripke is likely to step down as show runner, making way for Executive Producer, Sera Gamble, to take over. Kripke will stay on as Executive Producer and will be very much on hand, but I trust Sera Gamble, after talking with her last year and getting inside her brain a little.
Kripke maintains that this season will finish its story arc, so fans need not worry of its being dragged out until we all lose interest. Next season will be a new story and I’m sure the season finale will launch much speculation as to what that story could be.
SUPERNATURAL has one of the most loyal audiences of any show on television and does heroic work in a perennially tough time period. It has improved over last season among women and adults 18-34 (29% and 8%, respectively) this season, a remarkable accomplishment for a fifth-year show. (theCW)
Supernatural’s lead-in, The Vampire Diaries, will be back next year, and I have to say that with its twists and surprises, Thursday night’s have become an adrenaline rush for me. For two solid hours I’m kept at the edge of my seat, hugging my pillow and, I might add, I have no nails left.
The Vampire Diaries and Supernatural return with new episodes March 25th on the CW.
Nice Boy of the Week: Kristoffer Polaha

Kristoffer Polaha
This week’s Nice Boy is not really a new face in TV Land, but with his role as Nate “Baze” Bazile on the CW’s Life Unexpected, he’s certainly becoming the most memorable.
Kristoffer was born in Reno, Nevada, and became interested in acting while attending Robert Louis Stevenson boarding school in Pebble Beach CA. He graduated from NYU’s “Tisch School Of Arts” earning a bachelor of arts in 99.
Most recently from Mad Men, Kristoffer has also appeared in North Shore, Miss Guided, Dollhouse, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Bones, Better Off Ted, CSI:Miami, Without A Trace, Close To Home, Roswell and Tru Calling.
Polaha’s character on Life Unexpected is a very carefree, playful, single guy who is suddenly faced with a teenage daughter, beautifully played by Britt Robertson. As we watch “Baze” dealing with fatherhood, we see Polaha skillfully pulling us into his emotional storm; at one time making us laugh and cry. Lux connects with him faster than her birth mother largely, I think, because he’s such a child himself.
Polaha is married to actress Julianne Morris and they have two small boys, Kristoffer Caleb Polaha, Jr. and Micah.
Nice Boy of the Week: Joe Manganiello

Joe Manganiello
Please join us in congratulating our newest Nice Boy, Joe Manganiello. If you are a fan of the popular CW series One Tree Hill, you know him as “Owen Morello”, the barkeep on the show. Most recently, however, and to the delight of millions of True Blood fans, Joe has been cast as the sexy and much loved “Alcide Herveaux”.
Joe hales from Pittsburgh, PA, where he graduated from Mt. Lebanon High School in 1995, lettering in football, volleyball and basketball. It doesn’t look to me as though he lost any of that muscle tone.
Besides One Tree Hill, Joe has appeared in numerous television shows, including How I Met Your Mother, Medium, CSI: Miami, ER, ‘Til Death, Scrubs, Las Vegas and Close To Home. He also appeared in Spiderman as Flash Thompson.
Joe has been the stunt man on CSI: NY, One Tree Hill, ER, Close To Home and CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, and adds writer and producer to his list of credits for Out of Courage 2: Out for Vengeance.
Joe is probably as excited about playing Alcide on True Blood as the fans are to see him in that role. When talking with EW’s Ausiello about his reaction to finding out he got the part, Joe says, “I’m not afraid to admit that I started crying. I was just so excited. It’s a dream come true.” Joe prepared for Alcide, physically with what he calls the ’Werewolf Workout’. “Every day right now is all about the Werewolf Workout. It consists of Krav Maga, which is an Israeli fighting technique, and Cross Fit, which is kind of a gnarly crazy high-intensity workout. And I’m doing a little bit of weights in between.”
Bring on Alcide! Joe’s sweet smile and personality are more than enough to win him a spot on the Nice Boys hall of fame.

Life Unexpected is a Welcome Change

During the heyday of Warner Bros., the network specialized in gripping dramas such as Felicity, Gilmore Girls, Roswell, Everwood and Dawson’s Creek. But after the merger of the network with the United Paramount Network, those compelling dramas diminished significantly.

Life Unexpected premieres January 18 on the CW
Enter the new CW series: Life Unexpected. A much-buzzed about drama created by Liz Tigelaar (Brothers & Sisters and What About Brian) about 15-year-old Lux (Britt Robertson, Swingtown) who has bounced from one foster family to another in Portland, Oregon. She decides it is time to take control of her life, seeking to become an emancipated minor. As she journeys through the legal maze of this process, she finds her biological father, Nate “Baze” Bazile (Kristoffer Polaha, North Shore), who owns a bar and lives like an aging frat-boy with two slacker roommates Jamie (Reggie Austin, The Starter Wife) and Math (Austin Basis).
Baze is very surprised to learn he has a teenager daughter; and, in turn, he tells Lux who her mother is: Cate Cassidy (Shiri Appleby, Roswell), a star on the local “Morning Madness” radio show, who partners (on and off the air) with Ryan Thomas (Kerr Smith, Dawson’s Creek). Lux has been listening to Cate’s voice on the radio for as long as she can remember and feels an instant connection with the mother she has never met. When Baze takes Lux to meet her mother, Cate is shocked and saddened to learn that Lux has grown up in foster care; but is thrilled to meet her daughter.
Unexpectedly, a judge decides that Lux is not ready for emancipation and decides to grant temporary joint custody to Baze and Cate, who agree to move beyond the awkwardness and give Lux the family she deserves.
Critics have been raving about this new series since its inception and the buzz has continued to build, especially since the recently held winter press tour by the Television Critics Association earlier this month.
Will the CW have a winning drama on their hands? Tune in and decide for yourself; but I would trust the critics this time around as this looks like a return to the days of old.
Life Unexpected premieres tonight (January 18) on the CW at 9/8c and the pilot episode will reair on the network at 8/7c on Wednesday, January 20. The series will remain in this time slot until March 8 when it moves to its new timeslot of 8/7c and should conclude its final episode on April 12.
Spotlight On: Shiri Appleby

Debuting as a young child actor in the late 1980s and early 1990s, Shiri Appleby established herself as the “it” girl for young ingénue roles with a comedic flair. She was precocious and her infectious smile lit up the screen. Then, as she took on more advanced roles in her teens and 20s, that same engaging smile and sparkling persona kept her steadily employed as a working actor. By the time she was 18 years old, she had made appearances on Santa Barbara, thirtysomething, Who’s the Boss, Knots Landing, Baywatch, 7th Heaven and Xena: Warrior Princess. Then, after brief appearances in the films Deal of a Lifetime and The Thirteenth Floor, Shiri scored the plum role as the lead in the teen sci-fi series Roswell.

Shiri Appleby co-starred with Jason Behr in Roswell, which ran from 1999-2002.
In Roswell, Shiri played Liz Parker, a young woman whose life was changed forever after discovering aliens lived among us and who found herself irresistibly drawn to one of them. The series ran three tumultuous seasons, garnering rave reviews and a loyal fan base. During that same time period, Shiri continued to pursue film projects and co-starred in the acclaimed independent film A Time for Dancing, along side Larisa Oleynik.
After the cancellation of Roswell, Shiri was in constant demand working on 18 films over an 8 year period. Her film credits ranged from Swimfan with Erika Christensen to The Battle of Shaker Heights with Shia LaBeof and Charlie Wilson’s War with Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts. She also did a series of made for television films such as Darklight with Richard Burgi, Everything You Want with Nick Spano, Pizza My Heart with Eyal Podell (recently seen in the ABC sci-fi series Defying Gravity), Thrill of the Kill with Chris Potter, and To Love and Die with Ivan Sergei and Tim Matheson. Astoundingly, Shiri also found the time to squish in roles on two televisions series during the same time period. She appeared as the mistress of Campbell Scott in the little known J.J. Abrams series Six Degrees and as a young medical intern in the final season of ER.
In addition to her long film and television resume, Shiri appeared in three music videos for Gavin DeGraw’s “I Don’t Want To Be,” Sense Field’s “Save Yourself” and Bon Jovi’s “It’s My Life,” along side Will Estes. Clearly, Shiri is a favorite in all celluloid arenas of entertainment for she has conquered television, film and music video!

Shiri co-stars in Life UneXpected with Britt Robertson, Kristoffer Polaha and Kerr Smith, debuting January 18th on the CW.
Shiri is now appearing on the new CW series Life Unexpected which co-stars Britt Robertson, Kristoffer Polaha and Kerr Smith. Despite having not yet debuted, Life Unexpected is already a critical favorite, dubbed the next big hit series on the CW. Shiri plays Cate Cassidy, who finds herself reunited with her daughter who she had given up for adoption 15 years before. The show is a poignant look at a young woman who went in search of her birth parents and found an unexpected family. Playing to Shiri’s natural talents of an incandescent joy for life and a heart-warming enthusiasm that brings out the best of those around her, Life Unexpected will surely touch our hearts and remind us of the wonder of a family in search of love.
Life Unexpected debuts on the CW on Monday, January 18 at 9/8c, and then moves to Mondays at 8/7c on March 8, 2010.

Paul Wesley plays Stefan on "The Vampire Diaries"
In case you didn’t know, Paul plays Stefan Salvatore on the popular CW hit series, The Vampire Diaries. Since his days on The Guiding Light, Paul has appeared in television shows such as Smallville, The O.C., 8 Simple Rules, 24, Army Wives, Everwood and Law & Order:SVU. Paul also played the lead in the ABC Family mini-series, Fallen.
Born Paul Thomas Wasilewski , Paul changed his name when he realized he could make a career in acting. Says Paul, “Wasilewski was too hard to pronounce. I asked my family’s permission to change it.”
Wasilewski or Wesley, we don’t care. He’s still a Nice Boy to us!
Catch Nice Girl’s Faves on Late Night and Daytime
I don’t know about you, but there’s nothing I enjoy more than watching talent from some of our favorite television shows playing around with talk show hosts. In an effort to organize my DVR settings, I’m going to attempt to post a listing, when available, of late night and daytime talk show appearances. I hope this will aid you as well.
Nathan Fillion (Castle) – Regis & Kelly Monday, Jan. 11
Matt Bomer (White Collar) – Regis & Kelly Friday, Jan. 15
Ian Somerhalder (The Vampire Diaries) – Regis & Kelly Monday, Jan. 18
That’s it for a start. Am I missing one of your faves?
The CW Schedules Vampire Diaries Marathon
After this week’s episode of The Vampire Diaries, we won’t get a new episode until January 14, 2010, but the CW is taking pity on us and marathoning all 10 episodes of the series December 14-18. Two episodes will air each night for the whole week, so if you haven’t had a chance to watch the show yet, this is a great time to get caught up.
Nice Boy of the Week: Kerr Smith

Kerr Smith
Please join us in congratulating our new Nice Boy of the Week, Kerr Smith! Kerr is part of the cast of the mid-season, CW series, Life UneXpected, premiering in January.
Kerr began his career in acting on the popular soap, As the World Turns from 1996 – 97. Most know him from his role as ‘Jack McPhee’ in the second season of Dawson’s Creek. His youthful looks allowed him to play a 16 year-old at the age of twenty-six. I wonder how many knew that!
Kerr went on to appear in such television shows as Eli Stone, CSI-NY, Charmed, Justice and The Forgotten. His movie credits include My Bloody Valentine, Final Destination, Cruel Intentions 3 and The Forsaken, to list a few.
Life UneXpected is being compared to Gilmore Girls in the sense that it provides witty humor and heart-warming drama. The show centers on a teen named Lux (Britt Robertson) that tracks down her biological parents: Cate (Shiri Appleby), a talk radio personality, and Baze (Kristoffer Polaha), a bar owner.
They haven’t seen each other since high school and, in many ways, Lux is more mature than the adults that brought her into the world. Kerr plays Cate’s fiance, Ryan Thomas.
Nice Girls will be watching Kerr in Life UneXpected, and we thought that making him a Nice Boy of the Week would be a great way to get the ball rolling.
Watch Life UneXpected beginning January 18, taking over for Gossip Girl on the CW.
Wonder Twin Powers, Activate!: Warehouse 13’s Allison Scagliotti on Smallville

Wonder Twin powers, activate!
Warehouse 13’s erstwhile Claudia Donovan, Allison Scagliotti, is set to debut as Jayna/Twyla, one half of the fabled Wonder Twins, on Smallville’s November 13 episode. Alongside 7th Heaven’s David Gallagher as Zan/Tanner, Allison first appears in the episode called “Idol” and is described as a “Pixie-punk teen”. In this episode Jayna and Zan come to Metropolis to help The Blur (aka Tom Welling’s Clark Kent) fight crime; unfortunately, they botch several attempts which lands Clark in hot water with the fuzz.
No word on whether this is a one-time appearance by the twins, but we do know that Warehouse 13 is beginning pre-production for season 2 shortly, so unless Jayna has the power to clone herself, a reappearance would have to wait for a while.
Smallville airs Fridays at 8/7c on the CW.
