Good Witch Recap: “Written Like a Merriwick”

By  |

The primary focus of last night’s new episode of the Hallmark Channel popular, family friendly drama Good Witch was on a creative writing assignment for which Grace was struggling to complete until the unexpected arrival of an old trunk sent to Grey House by the Chicago Art Institute.

The tagline for the episode entitled “Written Like a Merriwick” is as follows:

Grace finds herself under the spell of Elizabeth Merriwick after Cassie discovers an old trunk filled with her vintage clothing; Cassie helps a mother and daughter reconnect over their past at Grey House.

Learning from the Past

Grace wasn’t the only one to learn from the past, as Cassie was visited by Joan, a former guest of the B&B, returning for a long delayed reunion (of sorts) not only with Grey House but with her daughter, Mary. As Cassie and Joan reminisced over an old photograph of the B&B guest and her then young daughter Mary, they decided to recreate the moment. This decision caused an interesting series of events to unfurl: George and Cassie set about changing the landscape of the front exterior of Grey House to replicate the look of the B&B from the past while Joan and Mary attempted to track down the right outfits and the flowers to match as perfectly as possible to that old photo.

Ironically or not, they – with a major assist from Cassie – tracked down the photographer of that picture; well to be more specific, they tracked down Andrew, the son of the photographer [the father had actually passed away], who had been getting treatment for persistent headaches from Cassie – and then later Sam. As it turned out, Andrew was under a lot of stress because of his accountant job – a job that he took on many, many years prior because photography [his real love] didn’t seem profitable enough UNTIL that reunion photo shoot. The headaches, of course, stopped once he left that job.

As for Grace, she was struggling to complete a creative writing assignment until an old trunk containing vintage clothing from her ancestor – Elizabeth Merriwick – showed up [just in time?!] to give her inspiration. Throughout the episode, Grace wore several pieces of clothing from that old trunk, which was sent to Grey House (its last known address of origin) by the Art Institute in Chicago, and she began writing remarkable stories about Elizabeth.

Soon enough, though, an old journal was delivered – written by Elizabeth Merriwick – that shocked both Grace and her cousin Abigail, as the two stories for which Grace wrote were verbatim from that journal. The only problem: Grace wrote those stories BEFORE receiving the journal: that’s the power of the Merriwicks.

Striving to Do Better

Elsewhere in town, Stephanie was struggling with an online “troll” who kept talking down the food at her café. While she tried to figure out the culprit behind the negative online reviews, she just might have discovered a not-to-so anonymous admirer in the form of Liam, Sam’s big city friend who now owns the microbrewery in town.

More surprisingly, however, was the reveal of the “troll.” It was none other than Mayor Martha Tinsdale, who was giving the negative reviews to not only Stephanie but nearly all of the other business owners in town not to be malicious but to make each of the business owners strive to do even better. Quite the under-handed ploy with good intentions.

Getting Into College

Because of Grace’s incredible stories about Elizabeth Merriwick, she was given the rare opportunity to interview with a recruiter from the nearby college Haverhill [the alma mater of Martha Tinsdale, naturally], but that meant that Grace’s best friend Courtney [aka Nick’s ex-girlfriend] got dropped from her much-anticipated interview with the college.

But once Grace learned that her inspired stories were basically copies of the actual stories [again, not intentional, but helped through the magic of the Merriwick clan], she felt guilty for being given Courtney’s place in line for admission to the respected college. So, what did Grace do? She touted all of Courtney’s accomplishments during her own interview, assuring that her best friend would get to attend the college of her choice. Besides, as Grace said, she still didn’t know where she wanted to attend college, let alone what she even wanted to study.
