Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D Roundtable: “Option Two”

By  |

Friday night’s episode of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. had a few twists and turns, and a lot of tense moments. The Nice Girls wanted to discuss it, and so here we go!

Here is the official tagline for the episode entitled “Option Two”:

“The team finds themselves trapped and under siege at the Lighthouse.”

Please join Rueben and Karen as they talk about what went down:

1. The lighthouse is crazytown! Patrick Warburton’s “General Rick Stoner” is back with a bevy of scenarios that send things into lockdown mode. Trope or no?

Karen: First off, ALWAYS WAIT UNTIL THE END OF THE MENU! I thought it was pretty genius, and then like Coulson, realized it didn’t help matters when the Marauders could go wherever they wanted.

Rueben: That whole little scene between Coulson and May was just so funny especially during such an intense moment. It’s pretty crazy to see Warburton in the mustache-to-rival-all mustaches (even Talbot would be jealous of that mustache) and that oh-so-70’s-suit. I have a feeling that Coulson will wait for the end of the menu from now on, though.

2. Let’s talk about those Marauders.

Karen: As Deke said, they’re called the Remorath, and they are a very obscure Marvel race. They’re simply called “Sca-Vengers” in the comics. They’re incredibly scary as they’re portrayed in SHIELD. I was so freaked out by the whole “gutting in the dark” thing. The sound effects on the show are so good – it totally sold it. *shudder*

Rueben: They creeped me out, that’s for sure. I always learn so much from you Karen! I don’t think I’d understand the show – or more precisely the characters – anywhere near as well if it weren’t for you. But what creeped me out even more is what Talbot did to them after he came out of the chamber. The same way the team was watching in absolute shock was me sitting at home staring dumbfounded at the TV while that was happening.

3. Daisy and Yo-Yo are not seeing eye-to-eye right now. Opinions on who might be more right?

Karen: Okay, so Yo-Yo says that Coulson has to die (which I think will happen in the finale), and Daisy wants to save him because she and May heard Robin’s prediction that he needs to put all the pieces together. My thought is that he has to put all the pieces of Centipede together, and then die. But Daisy and May will probably still try to save him, which might be the thing that causes the worldkiller (whoever that ends up being) to “kill the world”.

Rueben: I don’t want Yo-Yo to be right but I have a bad feeling that she is. The only caveat to that is the fact Daisy was digging up her biological mother’s grave. Why?!! Could something in her mother’s essence help? Or could it just make everything worse?

4. Qovas is back, and he’s LITERALLY rearing his ugly head. What’s his deal?

Karen: I maintain that he’s Kasius’ Father or Grandfather. He’s part of the Consortium and he wants to conquer worlds. Earth is next.

Rueben: I’ll agree with you Karen because I’m at the disadvantage of not knowing the Marvel world well enough that it is mostly a guessing game for me. I’m gonna guess that maybe he is Kasius’ grandfather and that over time they evolve into the “blue man group” for lack of a better term?

5. Okay, here’s a big one. Talbot. BECAUSE TALBOT.

Karen: Here’s where the show keeps bringing things full-circle. I love it when writers keep the tapestry going from S1 onward. In Season 1, we meet Franklin Hall, who is supposed to become Graviton. He was defeated really quickly, and I heard sad trombones – because Graviton is a HUGE baddie in the comics. Like… Magneto level strong. Gravitonium makes him incredibly powerful. Are you seeing this coming down Main Street here? Talbot IS Graviton. They retconned this villain and made him goodguy!Graviton. Talbot uses the chamber to redeem himself and takes out the Remorath RIGHT when our heroes were going to be defeated. I mean… can you GET more heroic? Now we’ll see if he becomes the villain worldkiller, or if he stays a good guy.

Rueben: I deliberately went on the internet after the episode aired to see if I could understand who they wanted Talbot to be after the chamber. So I actually understood your explanation above. Finally! I hope that since Talbot wants to make things right that he will stay on the path of being a good guy, on the SHIELD team and will help to stop Qovas.

Anything else?

Karen: Coulson and the Armageddon scenario menu… priceless. Also, May schooling him about it. So great. Even the conversation after the initial briefing where the two agents remarked that the arguing wasn’t normal – I liked that beat. Great writing in this episode, and this season continues to bring it.

Rueben: I keep waiting for the other shoe to drop with Mack’s friend Candyman. I’m hoping that he is a real, true good guy, but there is that little voice in the back of mind – each time I see him – that says, “wait, is he gonna turn out to be a bad guy?” I hope not because the team needs as many people on their side as possible.

Next week’s episode is called “The One Who Will Save Us All”.

Karen Lindsay, often teased as being "obscurely famous," talks a lot. (i.e. she podcasts). Her current and past projects involve television shows like "Chuck", "Castle", "Orphan Black", "Farscape", "Supergirl", "Lucifer" and many others. She's an avid gamer, reader, & collector of all things shiny - and while you may not think those things go hand-in-hand, they sometimes do. So don't ask her about how many pets she has in Warcraft. (or how shiny they are).
