When Calls the Heart Recap: “In My Dreams”

By  |

The penultimate episode of When Calls the Heart aired on Sunday night on the Hallmark Channel, finding Elizabeth dreaming about her husband Jack’s return to Hope Valley, Faith planning a surprise party for Carson and the Coulters welcoming an unexpected visitor to town who had some ulterior motives.

Elizabeth

With Jack still away training Mounties, Elizabeth is dreaming of the day he will return home, riding in on his horse, handsome in his red serge, coming home early to surprise her. That was a wonderful dream for her to have, but she still felt the emptiness of his not being there every day. That scenario, unfortunately, came true at the end of the episode: except it wasn’t Jack riding into town, but another Mountie looking for Elizabeth Thornton. The implied meaning behind that Mountie looking for her certainly MADE it seem that something horrible has happened to Jack, but given that the visiting Mountie didn’t actually SAY anything to Elizabeth about Jack, should give viewers pause.

Jesse

He was injured yet again at work – there seems to be a pattern forming here. This time around he injured his rotator cuff, making it necessary to wear a sling until his arm properly heals. Being the good boss he is, though, Lee offers Jesse work inside the office helping with volume estimates. Despite Jesse’s best efforts to make sense of the work, he was clearly struggling, eventually admitting to Elizabeth that he didn’t finish the 8th grade. Being the good teacher that she is, Elizabeth helped him out with the math and convinced him to come clean to his girl Clara about his education.

Carson

Carson’s birthday was fast approaching, and thanks to Bill letting her know that fact, Faith decided to hold a surprise party for the new town doctor at the White Stallion Saloon. But just when all the plans seemed to come together and everyone was prepared for the surprise, one of the farmstead’s needed his help birthing a foal; and it appeared he wouldn’t make his own surprise party. But, thankfully, the foal arrived and Carson made it – albeit a little late – to his party and was very surprised.

NOTE: It was quite funny watching Robert and Cody attempt to make a new cake to replace the one they destroyed; and just as funny watching Elizabeth, Florence and Mr. Yost try to make the boy’s feel good about their absurdly looking cake.

Rosemary

Rosemary and Lee were surprised by the unexpected visit from Eleanor Roberts, the widow of Lee’s silent partner, who arrived in Hope Valley to assess her late husband’s business holdings. But Rosemary’s intuition led her to distrust Mrs. Roberts; and she was totally right. The widow wanted to start a saw mill of her own in a neighboring town, wanting to hire Henry Gowen to run it – and for Gowen to steal Lee’s customer and pricing lists. More on that shortly. For now, how about Rosemary telling Abigail that she’s been very tired lately. Could that mean we might be getting an addition to the Coulter family soon?

Henry

Given Henry’s background, it would seem that Mrs. Roberts believed he was still very much that same kind of man [and while I know some fans and most of the residents of Hope Valley too believe he still can’t be trusted], asking him to steal from Lee to get a leg up on her soon-to-be-competition. But perhaps Abigail has been right along in her belief in Henry, as the former scoundrel, reporting Mrs. Roberts to Bill, catching her in the act of accepting the stolen paperwork and arresting her.

What are your thoughts on what really happened to Jack? Do you think that Rosemary is pregnant? What other revelations do you think the show has in store for its final episode of the season? Please share your thoughts below.

The season finale of When Calls the Heart will air on the Hallmark Channel on Sunday, April 22 at 9/8c.
