Women of the Week

By  |

Each week we watch all of the TV and nominate the women who stood out for us. Read our picks below and let us know who you thought was amazing.

Nominated by Melissa:
Jameela Jamil as Tahani on The Good Place
I’m nominating Jameela for her outstanding performance as Tahani/Rhonda in this week’s episode of The Good Place. Her alter-ego was a delight, from her American accent to her namedropping in Hell. But Jameela’s performance isn’t the only work I applaud her for this week; she also wrote a thoughtful, bold, empowering essay about consent that she published on Tumblr and has been referenced all over the place since. It’s a must read part of the conversation about sex and power happening right now, and makes me like Jameela even more than I already did.

Nominated by Cara:
Yara Shahidi as Zoey on Grownish
Yara Shahidi is woman of the week for me. In part because of how great she’s doing on Grownish. I’m especially glad to see that Zoey seems to finally be getting it together this week and making smarter decisions. But, Shahidi did a powerful reading of Assata Shakur’s poem Affirmation last week for Blackout for Human Rights, and it was a nice glimpse of the strong, accomplished woman she’s becoming.

Leah reads constantly, sing incessantly and watches TV what her Mother would consider an unhealthy amount. You can find her on twitter @IamPollyP or contact her via email at leah@nicegirlstv.com
