Salute to Rising Stars

By  |

In August, I posted the first of what I hope will be many rising stars articles, focusing on actresses who are on the move, actresses who deserve a little extra attention for their latest work.

After all, landing that crucial role in a TV movie or guest appearance in a successful show or film makes all the difference for aspiring actors.

Let’s take a look at the next two actresses for which viewers should keep their eye on:

Katherine Barrell

Katherine Barrell has appeared in episodes of Lost Girl, Reign, The Listener, Murdoch Mysteries, Saving Hope, Private Eyes and Workin’ Moms; but she is best known for her role of Officer Nicole Haught on the Syfy thriller Wynonna Earp.

Before she landed that role, she also appeared in the Lifetime movie Girls’ Night Out and the Hallmark Channel movie A Nutcracker Christmas. She also appeared in the horror flicks The Scarehouse and Definition of Fear and the Canadian comedy movie My Ex-Ex.

Before Wynonna Earp returns for a third season, she will appear in at least one episode of the Amazon series Tin Star.

Sophie Skelton

Over the course of the last few years, Sophie Skelton has guest starred in episode of the British TV shows DCI Banks, The Dumping Ground, Waterloo Road, Doctors, Foyle’s War, So Awkward and Casualty as well as having the lead role in the web series Ren: The Girl with the Mark.

But, it is her role of Brianna Randall Fraser in the Starz period piece Outlander that has put her on the map with American viewers.

She will next appear in the box office film #211, starring alongside Nicolas Cage, and in the upcoming horror flick Day of the Dead: Bloodline with Johnathon Schaech.

Here is to Katherine and Sophie as rising stars!

Please be on the look-out for more salutes to rising stars in the future.

Using her favorite online handle, Rueben is an East Coast-bred gal who is now a permanent Californian and a lifelong tv-oholic. She watches at least 25 TV shows a week, goes to the movies as often as possible, listens to music every waking moment, reads every day and “plays” on the internet every chance she can. Some of her current favorite TV shows are Outlander, Sweet Magnolias, Wednesday, The Mandalorian, The Equalizer, Fire Country, Miss Scarlet and the Duke, The Rookie, Cobra Kai, Virgin River, The Witcher, Leverage: Redemption and School Spirits.  She is looking forward to the season premieres of Hudson & Rex on UPtv and Skymed on Paramount+ as well as the return of fall TV albeit starting in February.
