VICTORIA: “The Queen’s Husband” {Recap}

By  |

Victoria must handle the rather difficult taste of how to emasculate Prince Albert but still keep him as a lesser to his wife, Queen Victoria in this week’s episode.

Now that Albert (Tom Hughes) is married to the Queen (Jenna Coleman), there are ways in which he is stiffled by his place as her lesser royal. He is not allowed to walk her into official dinners (that honor goes to her uncle the Duke of Suffolk), but he also has no duties in the Royal life (unless you count being a blotter for Victoria’s signature).

He, perhaps, finds a way to separate himself as his own man by speaking at an Abolitionist meeting with a few former slaves from America. Much of the episode is spent watching him trying to draft and then practice the speech. He does well with

Albert can only persuade is brother to stay long enough to hear his speech before leaving, but there’s no satisfaction in watching Albert force someone who cares for him when he finds only hollow victories (some machinations on Victoria’s part allow him to walk at her side later in the episode), but he will always be Victoria’s husband at this point in time.

Victoria continues Sundays at 9PM/8PM Central on PBS.
