SALEM: Dishes Best Served Cold {Recap}

By  |

Salem continues in its season arc to look at a long game for both the Devil and all those in Salem trying to avoid the end of the world.

After Mary (Janet Montgomery) lost her powers last week, she has been left to heal and choose her own fate in the world. She’s constantly hounded by The Sentinel (Samuel Roukin), who wants to see her die to free the Devil to do his own will. But she sees her freedom from witchcraft as a means to her own freedom after she’d long since been beholden to men in her life.

In the same way, Cotton Mather (Seth Gabel) is trying to escape Anne (Tamzin Merchant) because he knows too many secrets of the witches and Devil. He is now a wanted man by the Devil, and as he tries to escape to Boston, he is “saved” by some old family friends.

Too bad there witches and they want to kill him before the Devil makes it know how much he wants Cotton.

Lastly Mercy Lewis is trying to find new prey for her brothel, but it seems to anger some of the rest of the town. Is her life as a whore worth it for these girls? Some thing so because they keep the money – unlike they might have been if their brothers/fathers were in charge – but the process of becoming one of Mercy’s girls seems to equally difficult if you stop seeing Mercy as a savior.

By the time the episode ended, it’s easy to see that this season is working at a longer arc, which can make the week to week wait difficult. The breadcrumbs of what the ultimate plans are too far apart, but I appreciate that I can find them all the same.

Salem airs Wednesdays at 9PM/8PM Central on WGN America.

Roz lives in the Los Angeles area, and has been a long time California girl. Despite her better judgment, she enjoys shows about the shallow sides of her home city, but will also find time to watch iZombie, Jane the Virgin, and much more. With a love of history, she also watches anything that is grounded in real life, including Victoria and black-ish. Having worked with children, she also follows shows she knows they watch (reminding her of those days of yore for her in the process). Contact her at roz@nicegirlstv.com.
