NOTORIOUS Discussion: Pilot

By  |

Notorious premiered tonight and we have some thoughts regarding the pilot episode. The show focuses on the behind the scenes of a TV news show. Primarily the producer, Julia George (Piper Perabo) and lawyer Jake Gregorian (Daniel Sunjata) Her responsibility is to produce a great show. Her motto is, “The show always comes first” and this is already tested a time or two. Jake on the other hand just wants his clients, like tech playboy millionaires, to get the best publicity possible while facing charges. They often have the same goal and with a promise to always tell each other the truth it seems like it can work.

The cast is rounded out by J. August Richards (Angel, Agents of SHIELD), Ryan Guzman (Pretty Little Liars, Heroes Reborn) and Aimee Teegarden (Star-Crossed)

This show has a Scandal like feel. Is the behind the scenes news show a unique enough setting to keep people watching? Keep you watching?
Roz: I live for behind the scenes shows (maybe why I’ve loved every Sorkin show and Drew Carey back in the day), and I think the pull of the show being like TMZ and the stories being hot gossip will keep people watching. I mean, if anything the number of people invested in the Brangelina split tells me people will be keyed up, even if they’re fictitious characters.
Leah: I am worn out by Scandal so I think this is a refreshing fun show – for now. I’m all for intrigue and I love the behind the scenes but sometimes too much is….enough.

Looks like we are in for a multiple episode arc with this first tech billionaire case. Do you feel the show is doling out enough answers for questions?
Roz: I think there are enough questions and answers – much better than How to Get Away with Murder – from the pilot. Of course, there’s room for it to fall off, but I’m curious and I don’t see the case following a cookie-cutter resolution.
Leah: I’m with Roz on this one – as long as we get answers, anything is better than How to Get Away with Murder and their slow pace, then I am happy. I like long arcs if information is flowing and things are moving.

How long do you suspect our two main characters can remain platonic?
Roz: I give it three episodes. Unless they were a thing in the past and they’re beyond it now.
Leah: I’m guessing they will before midwinter TV Shows go on holiday break. They have the chemistry.

Will Ella actually sleep with Ryan in the first arc?
Roz: Yeah I think Ella and Ryan will sleep together.
Leah: Yes! She can act all tough about him using her to get ahead at his own job but she smiled and that smile said some things!

How will Jake stay in the show every week? He can’t be Julia’s inside man on every story she runs, can he?
Roz: Jake has the cache to have lots of interesting clients, and if they aren’t his, I think they’ll be from his firm. Give me more of his brother and junior partner and I’m equally happy.
Leah: It will be interesting to me to see how they make the two halves of this show into one cohesive unit. As long as they use each part, lawyers office and TV show together equally then I am good with it all.

Do you think we’ve seen and or met the person who is taking those photos?
Roz: I want to think it’s the researcher for the show, but I could be wrong. Probably not someone we’ve met.
Leah: I think we have but I don’t know who it is yet.

Notorious airs Thursday 9/8c on ABC

Leah reads constantly, sing incessantly and watches TV what her Mother would consider an unhealthy amount. You can find her on twitter @IamPollyP or contact her via email at leah@nicegirlstv.com
