Nice Girls Talk

Nice Girls Judge the Emmys

By  |

The Emmys are television’s annual opportunity to pat itself on the back for a job well done in front of millions of viewers, because if it isn’t televised then it didn’t actually happen. Below, the Nice Girls weigh on the best and worst of this year’s telecast.

Most Deserving Winners

maslany-malekMelissa: Rami Malek and Tatiana Maslany – two incredible actors killing it on their respective shows. Congratulations!

Roz: John Oliver and the The Last Week Tonight crew for Variety Show. If we can’t have another win from Jon Stewart, I’ll take John Oliver.

Lisa: I completely agree with Mel. No one deserved it more than Tatiana Maslany and Rami Malek. I was so excited for them!

Karen: TATIANA! I joked that she should have been the only nominee – five times. Also Rami and John Oliver. I wholeheartedly agree on both counts. I’d like to throw in Kate McKinnon for SNL and Patton Oswalt for his special.

Least Deserving Winners

Karen: Okay, I hate to phrase it as “least deserving,” but here we go. Against the competition, I was surprised that Louie Anderson took home an Emmy. Andre Braugher, Tony Hale, Keegan-Michael Key, and Matt Walsh were all REALLY strong contenders.

I also thought The People v. O.J. Simpson could’ve stood to take home a few less statues. I wasn’t very impressed. The performances were good, but some of the other nominees were better.

Also, The Voice? Really? Over JESSIE GRAFF in all of her superheroine glory & the American Ninja Warriors? pfft.

Melissa: I second the skepticism over The Voice. I don’t watch reality shows often, but how did American Ninja Warrior not win this one?!?

Best Speech

144721_tw5_6985-400x600Melissa: I was already loving Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ very amusing apology for the current political climate when she revealed that the reason she was trembling so much was because her father passed away on Friday. She somehow managed to deliver laughs then let us share her grief.

Runner Up: Sarah Paulson’s sincere tribute to Marcia Clark

Also, this wasn’t part of the speech, really, but I loved how excited Tom Hiddleston was for Susan Bier when she won Best Director for an episode of The Night Manager.

Roz: I loved Sarah Paulson’s speech to Marcia Clark, too.

Lisa: Sarah Paulson’s speech was amazing! I also like Sterling K. Brown’s speech.

Most Pretentious Speech

Roz: I saw where Tina Fey and Amy Poehler were going, but I didn’t love it, not that it was a speech for their win so much as it was a speech and their introduction into a category.

Weirdest Speech

Karen: I didn’t know where else to put it, but I wanted to mention Jeffrey Tambor and his plea to give trans actors a shot – kinda begging to get fired, amirite?

Roz: It took a while, but I was confused by Jeffrey Tambor’s introduction to Garry Shandling until the video played and then it all made sense.

Runner Up: Whatever it was that Steven Moffat was saying when Sherlock won.

Most Excited to Be at the Emmys!

144721_tw1_1893-900x600Melissa: The Stranger Things kids! They’ve been having so much fun hitting talk shows and having celebrities freak out over them following this summer’s smash hit series on Netflix, this must be the icing on the cake. I wonder how many people stopped them to take selfies tonight?

Lisa: The Stranger Things Kids for sure! I loved that they passed out peanut better and jelly sandwiches to everyone on their bikes. That was awesome!

Runner up: Rami Malek’s cousin. She was adorable and had a mini-freak out moment on the red carpet with Guliana Rancic. She was so excited!

Karen: I just dig those Stranger Things kids. I hope they stay that unpretentious. In turn, I love the shot they got of Sofia Vergara eating her sandwich.

Totally Over It

Melissa: Maggie Smith, obviously. Nine-time nominee, four-time winner, zero-time attendee. Dame Maggie doesn’t need your accolades!

Lisa: Yeah, I loved how Jimmy Kimmel called Maggie Smith out on that too. She is definitely over it and so are we (even though I do love her as an actress).

Karen: Thirded. I love the Dame, but yeah, she’s “too good” to go, and it doesn’t reflect well on her.

Best Jokes

144721_tw1_3021-900x600Melissa: Matt Damon roasting Jimmy Kimmel for losing to John Oliver’s Last Week Tonight was the extension of a years-long comedy bit. Amazing. I also enjoyed the extended “Jimmy’s mom makes snacks” bit and the impromptu “Got the hottest chick in the game, wearin’ my chain, that’s right” one-upmanship.

Roz: Leslie Jones with the Ernst and Young guys. Good on you for shaming those that wanted to exploit you! Matt Damon’s appearance also makes me smile. I love a nine-year old joke!

Lisa: Matt Damon stole the show. That was the best interruption ever! Matt Damon and Jimmy Kimmel jokes never get old.

Failed Jokes

Roz: The Mark Burnett line by Kimmel about Celebrity Apprentice and the Donald Trump lines in general. I’m over it.

Second bad joke: Bill Cosby’s name after a commercial break.

Lisa: The Bill Cosby joke was stupid and made everyone uncomfortable.

Karen: Bill Cosby should just be an unspoken shame at this point, right?

Melissa: Yeah, the Bill Cosby thing fell pretty flat, although I did appreciate that they put the camera on Amy and Tina for their reactions.

Best Dressed

Sarah HylandKaren: Sarah Hyland had an amazing non-dress, and the Stranger Things cast were ADORBS.

Lisa: I thought Priyanka Chopra looked amazing in her red dress! Gorgeous.

Roz: I have a soft spot for Allison Janney and her dress this year.

Melissa: There were so many gorgeous looks this year! I thought Tina Fey looked spectacular in that green dress, even though the style isn’t really anything new for her. Kristen Bell’s ball gown was to die for. Constance Wu’s gown was different (sleeves!) and she looked amazing in it. Constance Zimmer’s beautifully embroidered gown made me happy. But the one I keep coming back to is Sarah Paulson’s amazing green gown. The color, the sparkles, the movement, the sleeves, her hair, her makeup, her accessories…perfect.
