UNDERGROUND: Adina Porter and Theodus Crane Discuss {SPOILER}

By  |

This contains article spoilers for the fifth episode of Underground, “Run and Gun”. Do not read further if you haven’t seen the episode.

Last week’s Underground brought the viewers into the harsh reality of the slaves’ escape towards freedom with the death of two of the show’s characters – Pearly Mae and Zeke.

Following their characters’ deaths, stars Adina Porter and Theodus Crane took the time to talk with members of the press about their character arcs and just a bit about what they hope will result from those deaths.

As a viewer, I felt that it was important to know how – and if – each character’s death mattered in the grander scheme of the show and the story it’s telling.

After watching this week’s episode, it is clear that Pearly Mae’s death had an influence, though not in the way that Porter had originally hoped. Thought neither actor had watched “Run and Gun”, they had their own hopes for what would happen in future episodes.

“I hope [Pearly Mae’s] husband will listen to what I say and get my daughter to freedom. Or in heaven I’m going to give him hell,” Porter said when I asked how she hoped other characters would react to Pearly Mae’s death. So far, I don’t think that Porter’s wish has come true, but we still have many episodes left.

Crane answered my question as well: “Honestly, I hope that my part in the journey was significant enough to help the mission to get accomplished.”

Zeke’s death seemed to have been off the topic of conversation in this week’s episode, but hopefully by the finale there will be a greater understanding of the impact Zeke’s death had on the group and their mission. Pearly Mae’s too for that matter.

Continue to tune in to WGN’s Underground as viewers try to make sense of these two deaths and all the other complications that come for the remainder of the Macon Seven and those around them.

Underground airs on Wednesdays at 10PM Eastern/9PM Central on WGN America.
