Weekly Update

Women of the Week

By  |

We spend the week watching all the TV and finding the best performances. Check out who we’ve picked as our Women of the Week.

Essie Davis as The Hon. Phryne Fisher on Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries
Nominated by Melissa: I binge-watched all 34 episodes of this Australian series over the past few days, and I am in love with Essie Davis as Miss Fisher. Set in the late 1920’s in Australia, Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries is along the lines of Murder, She Wrote and the Poirot mysteries. Davis stars at Phryne (Fry-o-knee) Fisher, a wealthy Englishwoman in her 30’s (possibly…we’re never told explicitly) who moves to Melbourne after The Great War and becomes a private detective. She drives a motor car, is a crack shot, flies airplanes, has an active love life, champions the friendless, and embraces life head on. She’s adventurous, bold, witty, charming, flirtatious, fun-loving, sometimes frustratingly childish and selfish, fearless, kind, generous, understanding, terribly clever, and utterly feminine. Essie Davis embodies this character with energy and grace that has me aspiring to be more like her. With less dead bodies, of course.

Melanie Scrofano as Wyonna Earp on Wynonna Earp
Nominated by Liz: After watching the first 2 episodes, I had fun watching her sass and toughness. Wynonna comes with a lot of emotional baggage but when the situation calls for it, she can blast a demon back to hell with one shot from her Colt 45.

Melissa McBride as Carol from The Walking Dead
Nominated by Karen: I mean, she mowed down Saviors with an Automatic stuffed into her sleeve. After WARNING them to back down. How much bigger of a BAMF can you be?

Marie Avgeropoulos as Octavia on The 100
Nominated by Rueben: She has been committed to saving Lincoln from Pike’s men since he was falsely imprisoned by them. She came SO very close to reaching that goal in Thursday night’s new episode until Lincoln’s people, who were also imprisoned with him, were threatened with death. Watching her as Lincoln was led outside by Pike and his men and then shot down was heartbreaking, but her look of grief and despair quickly changed to outright hatred. I pity Pike when Octavia takes her revenge because it’s not going to be pretty. It was an extraordinary watching all of her emotions as they were clearly written on her face. No words were needed.

Maisy Stella as Daphne Conrad on Nashville
maisy-stella_sc_200x267Nominated by Ange: Daphne’s had a tough run this season with her father in jail, seeing her mother remarry and not to mention the constant drama with her older sister Maddie. Only a few weeks ago, we saw Daphne act out at all these changes, but this week we saw a much more vulnerable side to the young pre-teen. Just like any younger sister, Daphne looks up to her older sister and likes to spend time with her but Maddie is always pushing her away. It continued this week and the quiet heartbreak and sadness that Maisy portrayed as Daphne felt like she was being replaced when Maddie chose to turn to her new older friend Cash instead of Daphne, just broke my heart. I thought Maisy was gave a pretty understated and emotive performance, especially given how young she is.
