WOMEN OF THE WEEK

By  |

There are so many great women on TV these days that we like to take a moment each week to highlight the ones that really stood out for us.

Chyler Leigh as Alex Danvers and Melissa Benoist as Kara Danvers from Supergirl
Nominated by Karen: Kara was affected by Red Kryptonite, which allowed her to say and do things that were incredibly hurtful to her sister, Alex (played by Leigh). It allowed the two women to deliver amazingly emotional performances this week. Benoist’s emotions ran the gamut, from flirty, to angry, to completely disconnected – and Leigh had to pick up the pieces when the effects wore off and the realization hit. Scenes between the two characters were charged and electric, and some of the best the show has seen.

Ange: I second Melissa Benoist! Week after week we’ve seen Melissa play the sweet and awkward Kara Danvers and the strong and compassionate Supergirl, and even back in her Glee days we’ve always seen Melissa as the kind good girl. Yet this week, when Kara/Supergirl was affected by the red kryptonite, we saw a different side to the characters – bold, confident, fearless and carefree and Melissa’s performance made it seem just as natural as the lighter elements of her character. She’s definitely continuing to lift her game week after week.
Cay: I would have to agree with the Supergirl dynamic duo.
Rueben: I wholeheartedly agree with the others about Chyler and Melissa on Supergirl. That was a great episode showcasing them both.
Jan: I’m onboard with the Supergirl crowd. Chyler quietly displayed some deep emotion that tugged on the heartstrings, and Melissa was incredible in bringing out the dark side of her character.

Rachel Harris as Dr. Linda Martin and Lauren German as Det. Chloe Decker from Lucifer
Nominated by Melissa: Dr. Linda got out of the office in this week’s episode and finally met Det. Decker, the object of Lucifer’s obsession. We’ve already commented on the terrific chemistry Tom Ellis has with each of these women individually, but it was a delightful surprise to see that they have chemistry with each other as well. The two most important women in Lucifer’s life right now (sorry, Maze) quickly hit it off and soon demonstrated how their unique skill sets can benefit each other. The scene at the bar when Dr. Linda and Det. Decker work together reason out a solution to part of the case was so fun to watch and a welcome demonstration of their intelligence. More, please!

Karen:
Oh yeah! Doctor Linda got a bigger role this week, and she even turned down some sexitiemz with Luci this week. I like that pick.
Leah: The girls all came together this week and our poor Luci didn’t quite know what to do with all the bonding. The way they teamed up was so great to watch. It was like it’s own spin off, The Doctor & The Detective.

Loretta Devine as Cynthia on The Carmichael Show
Nominated by Lisa: The Carmichael show is a family sitcom that touches on relevant social issues with humor, lots of opinions, and controversy. It is a very smart and clever show. This week, there were two episodes back-to-back and she was hilarious in both. In the funeral episode, she stole every scene she was in. It was a touchy subject loretta-devinebecause her father-in-law passed away but he was not a good man. So it brought up the question of telling the truth about who he really was in the eulogy, or lying and singing his praises. While that conflict was happening, Cynthia knew one thing for sure. There was going to be a fabulous musical performance at the funeral. When she took the podium, she sang Ave Maria and it was hilarious! Her comedic timing was perfect and she stole the show. Bravo Ms. Devine!

Leah reads constantly, sing incessantly and watches TV what her Mother would consider an unhealthy amount. You can find her on twitter @IamPollyP or contact her via email at leah@nicegirlstv.com
