By  |

Belief and trust are common threads running through the lives of the ladies from Chicago Med and Chicago Fire this week. Read on to find out exactly how…

Sharon Goodwin: As Chief Administrator it’s sometimes tough having to juggle the demands of the influential men and women in suits (aka the board) with your own beliefs on what you think is in the best interests of the hospital you are in charge of and the patients in it and this week was a clear example of that for Sharon. A young patient named Christy is at Chicago Med because she’s finally getting a bone marrow transplant. The young woman has been in and out of Med for 10 years – in fact Sharon had Maggie’s position when Christy first came in. Christy and her family are so relieved and grateful that she will finally get the treatment she needs and be on her way to living a normal life. In fact Christy’s younger brother has been raising money to send Christy’s donor on a holiday when the transplant is done as a token of appreciation. However, when the hospital board hear of this, they pull the plug on the transplant as they view this token as payment and it’s against the rules. Needless to say Sharon is furious and when Christy takes a turn for the worse and the board still refuse to budge, she gives the go-ahead to do the transplant anyway and says she will take the fall for any consequences. The transplant is a success and afterwards the board rep tells Sharon that they’ve decided not to take any action because it would be bad PR. While she is off the hook, Sharon is disgusted that it took a young woman nearly dying for the hospital to change their mind and realise the purpose of the hospital is to help make patients better. Good on her for standing her ground and sticking by her beliefs!

April Sexton: Speaking of beliefs, we get an insight into April’s personal beliefs and faith when a man from the local shelter is admitted to the hospital once again after giving his boots to someone else. He was just in the hospital a week or so ago for frostbite after he gave his gloves away. As a Catholic, April views him as a modern day saint with his self-sacrificing behaviour. However, when it’s revealed that his actions are because of lesions on the brain and he ends up taking a turn for the worst and changes right before her eyes, April is thoroughly disappointed and it appears as though her faith has been shaken until Dr Charles points out that she is surrounded by examples of self-sacrifice every day in the hospital.

Dr Natalie Manning: Considering she only gave birth last week (although in the timeline of the episode it’s much less than that), Nat is seriously calm, especially considering that she’s also a first time single mother. Even her hovering mother-in-law doesn’t seem to bother her the slightest and when her parents arrive from Seattle, she’s even happier. It is while they are here that there is a possibility that she could one day move to be closer to her parents, however not until she finishes her fellowship at Med and finds a job somewhere. Nonetheless, it sends mother-in-law Helen into a panic and even has her reconsidering her attitude towards Dr Halstead. Looks like he won’t have to worry about hanging out with Nat and being judged now.

Maggie Lockwood: Although she’s fawning over Owen and joyful for young Christy, that doesn’t mean that there isn’t room for this nurse to show some of her usual sass. Maggie once again doesn’t sugarcoat anything when she notices that Dr Halstead is avoiding Natalie and despite his protests, gives him a reality check that everyone (or at least everyone they work with) knows that he likes Natalie.

Sarah Reese: When a couple on their first date a bought in after being involved in a car accident with an ex-con, Sarah is on hand to help the three patients.

Gabriela Dawson: After finding out last week that Chili’s sister was found dead, Dawson tries to reach out to Chili, but the young paramedic turns on her. Later on she has a change of heart and has a D&M with Dawson and Brett, promising to get her act together. Yet at the end of the episode when they’re at Molly’s and Chili is throwing back shots, Dawson tells Brett that they have to let their grieving colleague make her own choices.

Sylvie Brett: Feeling bad for turning her partner in especially after discovering that Chili’s sister has died, Brett tries to offer her support and sympathy to Chili but she just turns her down. However, when they’re on a call and it gets violent, Chili saves Brett with a baton that she’s not supposed to have. Grateful for her saving her life, Brett promises not to report her and it seems like things are back on track for the partners. We were a bit quick to throw a victory party though because Brett looks pretty concerned when she sees Chili throwing back shots at Molly’s at the end of the episode. Drama aside, there still seems to be hints of a potential Otis/Brett pairing – we all know he’s still into her and when she tells him this week that she dug the mustache that he recently shaved off, we can’t help but sense a little glimmer of hope for these two.

Jessica ‘Chili’ Chilton: When he learns about the death of her sister, Boden calls Chili into his office to check in with her. He suggests to her to take time off and when she refuses and seems a it casual about the potential dangers that could happen on the job if she’s distracted, he warns her that the incident with the patient last week and the wrong dose was strike two and if there is a strike three, not only will she be done at Firehouse 51, she won’t be able to work anywhere else in Chicago. Given the turnaround of paramedics on Ambulance 61 over the last couple of seasons, I hope Chili gets her act together. We could do with some stability there! After this reprimand, Chili blames Brett and is not impressed that she’s made Chili’s personal life her business and when Dawson tries to approach her, Chili is equally as cold. There does seem to be a turn around when she breaks down in the locker room in front of Brett and Dawson and shares how close she used to be with her sister before her sis got caught up with a bad crowd. (P.S. How nice was it to see a scene with just the three leading ladies of the show?) We totally thought this would be the start of her road to recovery, but nope, she’s back to her carefree and no concern for consequences ways by the end of the episode if her behaviour at Molly’s is any indication. You’re sliding on a slippery slope there, Chili!
