Weekly Update

Women of the Week

By  |

New year, new Women of the Week. Follow along with us as we share our favorite women from last week in TV.

Hayley Atwell
Peggy Carter on Marvel’s Agent Carter
Nominated by Rueben: In the two-hour season premiere on Tuesday night, Peggy was back in full swing, taking down her nemesis Dottie with one amazing fight scene, getting the best of the Russian assassin. And then in Hollywood, she continued to prove her worth, intelligence and resilience in the case of the Lady in the Lake and all that went down at Isodyne. She is a really incredible woman.

Nominated by Roz: I want to give it to Peggy Carter, for you know being Peggy Carter and running around LA with a lovely little gun in her garter.

Sara Rue
Candace on Mom
Nominated by Melissa: Playing the “straight woman” on a sitcom can be a thankless task, but Sara Rue has turned what might have been a caricature into someone on the way to being a full-realized character. Sara plays Candace, Baxter’s wealthy new wife, under whose influence he has turned over a new leaf (for the most part). Candace usually comes across as shrewish, snotty, and controlling, a foil to humble, trying-to-do-the-right-thing Christy. She’s not easy to like, but there’s always been a hint of vulnerability behind the facade, a tiny bit of desperation in how Sara played the character. This week, Sara’s groundwork finally paid off when we caught a glimpse into Candace’s relationship with her father. Moving between broad comedy (showing up drunk at Christy’s apartment) and intense vulnerability (brunch with her father), Sara deftly showed us a side of Candace that made me want to give her a hug at the end, too.

Paige Hill, Julie Edwards and Cherish Lombard from WKRN in Nashville
Nominated by Liz: They were out there, chasing umbrellas and dealing with shattered car windows as they stood in the wind and snow and ice to bring us the road conditions, live. They represent all of the women covering these winter storms, both here and on the east coast. Some of them gave up their own weekend travel plans. All with a sense of humor, because what else are you going to do, right?
