COMMUNITY: G.I. Jeff

By  |

We’ve got another Very Special Episode of Community this week: this time we’re living in a world of G.I. Joe, that 80s cartoon that launched a line of five-inch action figures and accessories.

Jeff – Wingman – is a GI Joe who finally manages to kill a COBRA agent (and a very high up one at that), but then the Joe’s shun him because they’ve never killed a COBRA agent before. QUEL DOMMAGE!

Wingman and his team – Three Kids (Shirley), Buzzkill (Britta) and Tight Ship (Annie) – are all sent to GI Joe jail, where they meet the GI Joe rejects, including Fourth Wall (Abed). As always, Fourth Wall is all knowing and understands that this is a cartoon and that it is only one dimension. As Fourth Wall talks about one mission that landed him here – a trip to a COBRA secret facility Greendale – Wingman passes out at the mention of Greendale and slowly the walls of reality start to slip. Tight Ship and Buzzkill both call Wingman Jeff.

COBRA attacks the base where Wingman and his friends are locked up, but Wingman can’t avoid killing people – again – and after some marvelous toy commercials, the team leaves in a submachopper for Greendale.

At least now Wingman and his friend are labeled Mutineers, but they have some really awesome figures. Wingman is worried about the visions he’s having (the commercials), and soon enough they’re at Greendale, which turns out to be our favorite Community College. Assistant Commander (Deal Pelton) works alongside Overkill (Chang), Zim Zam (Duncan) and Major Digg (Hickey) that then makes Wingman realize that he works at Greendale.

Wingman’s truth is that he got very drunk and took some youth pills to avoid his birthday – and his age. Jeff doesn’t want to admit his age, and so he’s tried to regress into his youth so that he can avoid being 40. Too bad the JOEs and COBRA decide to join forces and try to kill Wingman.

With their combined forces, JOEBRA have Wingman tied up and Wingman wants to blow stuff up and hang out rather than rule them, but as soon as COBRA Commander and the lead Joe both are ignorant in the ways of the real world (anatomy and alcohol included). Wingman defeats all the JOEBRA forces and Wingman comes back into the real world where Jeff wakes up in a hospital bed surrounded by the Save Greendale team. Jeff reveals that his age to everyone in the group (Annie and Abed are shocked enough) and everything feels very much like The Wizard of Oz ending where Dorothy explains that all her friends were in her dream.

80s cartoon messages imparted via our tag and everything feels right with life. My childhood feels relived.
