ABC Family

NICE BOY OF THE WEEK: Brett Dier

By  |

It is my pleasure to introduce our first Nice Boy of 2014, Brett Dier from ABC Family’s Ravenswood. In a recent press call with the young actor Brett talked of music, martial arts and social media. He also shares his New Year resolution with us.

Brett plays Luke Matheson, the brooding twin brother of Olivia (Merritt Patterson), who takes his responsibility as protector of his family very seriously. Ravenswood is not friendly toward the Mathesons after the death of their father, which they blame the twins’ mother for.

Then there’s this curse the town seems to be under. Luke is reluctant to believe in it, but events occur that completely shred any doubt. Now he’s just as determined as Olivia, Caleb and Remy to get to the bottom of this mystery and break the curse, if they can.

Brett talked about his own superstitions in the short Q & A. “Before Ravenswood I did a film called Backmask as well, and that whole movie was actually filmed in an abandoned insane asylum, and it hadn’t been used for 60 years, so I’ve had experience in these kinds of things. I always have an experience with personally involving ghosts. On Ravenswood in New Orleans I actually saw a ghost and I’m totally believing in that stuff now so it kind of makes it more realistic for me to play.”

Brett is not only a talented actor, his love of music and martial arts has directed him to actively pursue both. “I’ve been playing piano since I was six or seven. I took lessons, but then I stopped — and now I just do improv. I was actually writing a song this morning, it’s a comedy song about how insecure I am. I’m writing that and I’m going to try and get a music video together. So it’s just something that I do on the side to entertain myself. I didn’t want to pursue it, just something I’d put on YouTube to amuse people.”

“I haven’t had a chance really to do a martial arts role, but I really want to. I want to act like Jackie Chan in a movie.” Brett’s long-term ambition is to win an Oscar, and I think from what I’ve seen on Ravenswood so far, he may well be on his way to achieving that goal.

Time spent with Brett’s family means a rousing game of Jenga. The holidays are the perfect time for this. “We play Jenga.  I mean who plays Jenga, right?  We play Jenga every Christmas and we get really into it and really competitive.  I love Jenga.  I want to get the giant Jenga set with huge blocks.  That’s what we’re trying to get.  We’re trying to order that on Amazon right now.”

Brett admits to being crazy about Twitter (@Brettdier) and judging by his tweet numbers (more than 10,800), I think it’s safe to say that he’s also a master of it. “Twitter’s great! I’m actually kind of addicted to it, so I have to stop. I promised myself to not go on it for the next few days, but it’s a very hard thing to do. I’m addicted to it. It’s horrible, but I love it. I love talking to fans, and it’s so cool to see all these answers from all around the world and receiving people’s feedback. It’s really awesome.” It doesn’t hurt the show either as Ravenswood fans flood Twitter during episode airings.

Brett is nothing like his character on Ravenswood, and while we love Luke, Brett is much more fun. After chatting with him on this call it really was a no-brainer to make him our Nice Boy of the Week. Welcome to 2014, Brett!

“Every year I try and challenge myself more and more, whether it be acting or everything I do. I just want to try and be better than the year before.”

Ravenswood returns Tuesday, January 7 at 9/8c.
