NIKITA: Midway Through The Final Season

By  |

As so often is the case when everything in a story seems to be coming together and falling apart at the same time, last Friday’s episode of  Nikita was one of the best.   There are only three episodes left in this short, final season. It will be interesting to see what Craig Silverstein has in store for us.

This new and final season of Nikita was off to a fast moving start with plot twists every few minutes in the first episode. Definitely not boring. Last season ended with Nikita and her team in a nightmare situation that conceivably made them the target of every law enforcement and stealth force in the USA, if not the world. So Nikita decided to leave the team without a word and disappeared to take the target off their backs. This season began with Nikita having a nightmare that the whole team having been hunted down was being killed because of their association with her.  Then she wakes.  She decides to leave the forest in Canada where she has kept hidden for the last three months and heads back to America.

In no time at all, her whereabouts become known to first Amanda and then, through Amanda’s devices, known to the public. Trying to set the record straight, Nikita goes directly to a television station to speak to a reporter who has a particular interest in her story. This is when Nikita gets some idea of the lengths and attention to detail that Amanda and her cohorts at the “Shoppe” have employed to keep the spotlight on her. The building is surrounded by FBI agents in a matter of minutes. Amanda used the cell phone that the reporter was carrying to listen in on his conversation and find out that Nikita was with him and divulging the truth. This was followed by brainy twist after twist to the plot as Nikita finally made her escape from the building with help from her still loyal team.

While Nikita was away Alex and the team have been targeting human trafficking rings and using her rich girl cover to camouflage the skills, knowledge and high-tech  that make her so successful at hindering their operations.  However, she has unwittingly made herself a great annoyance to Amanda and the Shoppe.  The same organization that built the amazingly real looking hand that Michael was given after losing his hand last season. Benevolent as they tried to seem at the time, they are now emerging more and more each episode as the evilest of the evil. “Worse than Amanda?”, you ask. Well, judging from the way this last episode ended, we will soon find out.

By using ties to human trafficking, the Shoppe is buying people of particular size, build, etc. to surgically alter and turn into doubles of key people in various agencies. So far, we know that the President of the USA – who Nikita is blamed for assassinating – was one of those doubles. Another was the head of the FBI who was of course a major player in the search for Nikita. And now in this last episode, we find out that Birkhoff’s dad, who is a computer genius (go figure, right?) for the NSA, has been kidnapped and a double put in his place.

Nikita airs Fridays at 9/8c on The CW. If you need to catch up, full episodes are available on the official CW site. You can go back even further by watching previous seasons on Netflix.
