RECAP: Castle 6×03 “Need to Know”

By  |

I’m gonna say up front that I enjoyed this episode, but it’s not anything stellar. It felt like a vehicle to get Kate out of DC as fast as possible. Just passing time until the show gets back on the track. That’s not to say there weren’t some really bright spots, but they were kinda few and far-between.

Rick and Kate are showing their frustration at being apart. One of my favorite interchanges in this hour was when Kate kissed her phone and Rick caught the kiss and pasted it on his face. ADORBS! Soon thereafter,  Castle is trying to get his mind off missing Kate, having an unwanted house guest, and being bored by helping out his old pals back at the 12th.

Of course his way back to Ryan and Espo isn’t smooth sailing. Not only is Perlmutter (whom *I* love) trying to snark him away, the boys feel like Castle has turned to the ‘opposition’. Rick’s also not thrilled with ‘the new guy’ who has decimated Kate’s old desk.

I felt absolutely no connection to the case of the week. Almost completely bored me – even though I’m usually very forgiving when it comes to the crimework in the show. Gates returns this week, and while Penny Johnson does her usual stellar job, she seemed to be there just to rub against Kate and Rachel. To sum it up – former teen star is killed, revival of ex-show in the works, said star was acting strange about the revival, finds out about co-star’s thievery, he confesses, case closed.

Well, kinda. The CIA then set up the victim’s gal pal and put her in danger to expose the syndicate behind the money. That doesn’t sit well with Kate, so she tips off the press and her old team so they can tie things up instead. While Rick thinks this move is “pure genius”, Rachel and the FBI have a different opinion, and it ends up getting Kate fired. (oh, don’t even complain about me spoiling that – the show aired four days ago)

Pi’s still irritating, Martha tries to explain Alexis’ motives to Rick, and Castle buys a DC pad for Kate and himself. Of course, he’ll probably lose a ton turning it around so quickly, but we all knew they were never moving out of NYC, right?

Aside from the Caskett moments and Perlmutter’s fascination regarding bird poop – a rather meh episode. And while I’m at the Castle-bashing, why does Rick have to do the bait-and-switch thing with Kate when he wants to take their relationship in a GOOD direction? *sigh*

On the bright side, I’m looking forward to seeing what happens now that Kate’s been fired from her DC job. I’m guessing she doesn’t get to just waltz back in to her old life – but you never know.

Pi-ku for the week:

Anti-aging drinks
Rick wants Pi away from Alexis
He smells rotting ambition

Karen Lindsay, often teased as being "obscurely famous," talks a lot. (i.e. she podcasts). Her current and past projects involve television shows like "Chuck", "Castle", "Orphan Black", "Farscape", "Supergirl", "Lucifer" and many others. She's an avid gamer, reader, & collector of all things shiny - and while you may not think those things go hand-in-hand, they sometimes do. So don't ask her about how many pets she has in Warcraft. (or how shiny they are).
