And the first lesson of tonight’s episode is if you find a bunch of mushrooms growing in the floor of an abandoned building, don’t dig in them… This week’s victim is a well-dressed female who certainly would have seemed out of place in the neighborhood where she was found. The victim is identified – she was reported missing by Judy Trudy, a popular TV judge. Booth and Brennan visit the set of the show and soon get in trouble for talking in the audience (in the middle of a taping) and have to reveal their real reasons for attending.

The judge and the show’s current producer suggest that she might have been in that part of town looking for litigants for the show. They tell her that the victim used to be a producer on the show and she also dated the bailiff. He tells them that they were married for a while and lived happily with their adopted dog, but then broke up when she became too obsessed with her job.

Angela reviews footage of previous people who appeared on the show. The tape shows the victim getting the people all riled up before show tapings. Booth and Sweets interview the most likely candidate, but she denies killing the victim.

Finn and Brennan find evidence of a healing facial fractures on the victim. Booth finds out about a guy she met online that she dated once, then filed a restraining order against him for stalking. The injuries to her face occurred during the time after their first date. He also sent her some really creepy Barbies, tied up and with missing faces, but denies hitting the victim or killing her. Viewing more footage of the show makes it clear how the victim’s facial injury occurred – Judge Trudy got sloshed and hit the victim in the face with her gavel.

They question her and she can’t admit that she’s a drunk. The insurance company prohibited alcohol on the set, but Trudy couldn’t get by without it. Booth interviews the current show producer, and accuses her of strangling the victim with a scarf to get her job, but she still denies killing the victim.  Further examination of the victim’s injuries suggested that the victim was hung over a ledge and then cut down and dropped to the floor. They determine that she was hung with a spiked dog collar – a collar that used to belong to a dog of the same rare breed as the victim’s dog.

They confront the ex-husband, who shared custody of their beloved dog with her after the breakup. He admits that he showed up to pick up the dog one day and found that his ex had left her chained outdoors when she went to work and the dog had jumped off the deck and hung itself. He was so overcome by grief that he hung the victim in retaliation. (That’s seriously messed up!)

Characters:

Brennan is once again upset by suggestions that Christine might be merely normal, rather than extraordinary, after she is accused of biting another kid at day care. Brennan just won’t let it go, no matter what everyone tells her and starts trying to mount a case to prove Christine innocent. She convinces Angela to hack into the daycare’s records to see if there is any evidence that Christine actually bit another girl. In ridiculousness even for Brennan, she makes an impression of Christine’s teeth and has Angela compare them to pictures of the other little girl’s wound. They are a 78% match, which to Brennan means that she’s likely innocent. Christine later bites Brennan on the neck, and she’s still in denial, and planning on telling people that Booth bit her while they were making love. Of course, he’s not so on board with her plan.

Hodgins finished Finn’s bottle of hot sauce, which was the last bottle he had from his dead grandmother. Hodgins feels bad and is determined to figure out what is in the sauce and make more. He’s successful and he and Finn manage to convince a local restaurateur to market it for them as “Opie and Thursten’s Hot Sauce”.

My Thoughts:

This episode had a great comedic premise, but didn’t quite live up to its potential. It would have been awesome if Brennan had gotten arrested and dragged out like one of the litigators on the show… her antics when it comes to Christine are starting to wear a bit thin. Every time it seems like she gains a bit of self awareness, she seems to backslide and today she wasn’t as entertaining as she was obnoxious.

We finally got a bit more info on what’s been going on with Hodgins and Angela since Pelant stole Hodgins’ fortune – they’ve had to take a mortgage out on their house and Hodgins is stressing it. Attempting to gain back his fortune by partnering with Finn in the hot sauce venture is an interesting twist.
