Bones 7.01: The Memories in the Shallow Grave

Quick refresher of last spring’s finale for those who need it: Brennan and Booth went undercover as hicks (Buck and Wanda) in a bowling league, Angela had her baby and his eyesight is fine, and we finally find out exactly what Booth and Brennan were doing that night that they took refuge from the sniper and Mr. Nigel Murray’s death in Booth’s bed. Brenna’s prego and Booth’s the daddy!

If you missed Fox’s sweet video montage of Booth and Brennan’s relationship, be sure to check it out here.

Character Updates: When we rejoin our favorite crime investigators, Brennan is 5 months pregnant, and her and Booth are adorably happy. She is hormonal and is struggling amusingly with her emotions which are usually so well in check. Her and Booth are bouncing back and forth between their two places because Brennan isn’t ready to move in together permanently. When she finally decides she wants to live with Booth, she insists that he move into her place like is customary with the Iroquois, which ticks Booth off pretty royally. Angela tries to convince Brennan that they should get a place of their own rather than move into one of their current places, despite the “uncertainty of the real estate market”.

Later, alone at the Jeffersonian, Brennan falls over and gets stuck behind some crates and calls Booth to help. He rushes to the rescue, lights flashing, and they make up. Booth tells Brennan that it is important to have their own place so he can distance himself from his father. She agrees that they can get their own place, even though it’s a foolhardy financial decision in the current market. At the end of the episode, they are playfully arguing over the price range for the house – Bones wants to buy a multimillion dollar place and Booth wants them to share the cost 50/50 and he can’t afford that kind of place.

In other news,  Cam is rocking a new chin-length ‘do with bangs and Angela and Hodgins’ baby is adorable! Speaking of Angela, I thought it was kind of weird that Angela was so eager to see a picture of Booth naked making an omelet. They’ve always had a rather unconventional relationship, but still, what woman asks to see pictures of her best friend’s significant other naked?

Case of the Week: Claire, a pastor’s wife with a history of amnesia, is found dead in a state park. Cause of death is a sharp object through the brain, but her body has evidence of previous trauma including a brain injury and a bullet fragment in her femur. One of the early suspects, Kwon, is a man who suffered a head injury in a plane crash and can only speak when he plays the violin. However, when previous accusations of domestic violence against her pastor husband comes to light, the suspicion shifts to him until Sweets and Booth start investigating her life during her amnesic episode and realize that her doctor has a gambling problem and killed her for money that she hid after a robbery she participated in before she regained her memory. A piece of chewing gum stuck on a rock ends up linking the doctor to the crime scene.

Memorable quotes:

What you see is the manifestation of your own virility – Bones, commenting on her increasing size

I’m not normal, I’m extraordinary – Bones

God is not a sociopath – Booth

The duck sauce is where Claire suffers her initial injury…and the fried rice is D.C. – Sweets

She’s having that baby so the next generation will have someone to make them feel dumb  – Wendell

When we get a house, I don’t want a TV in our bedroom. Research shows that it can compromise your sex life – Bones

And a tree house…I always wanted a tree house – Booth      Me, too, I thought it would make a nice lab – Bones

Overall, I thought it was a pretty average episode, but I expect Brennan’s response to her pregnancy to be more and more entertaining as the season progresses. What did you think?

Cay's family thinks her obsession with pop culture is "not normal". Normal is boring!
