THE SECRET CIRCLE: A Secret Revealed and a Life Lost in “Slither”

By  |

I don’t know about you, but I was so blind-sided by last night’s Secret Circle episode, Slither, that I’m still absorbing and processing it today. It’s difficult to do because I’m stuck on the loss of Nick. I can’t believe that happened!

Melissa is possessed and she gets Nick to dig up an old suitcase, telling him that it contains her family journal. He’s looking forward to doing magic with her, just the two of them alone. The case, however, does not contain the book, but more snakes, or demons as we come to find out.

The case is bound by magic though, and Melissa needs the Circle to break the spell. She threatens to kill Nick if they don’t help her, which of course they begin to do. Cassie ran to get help when the demon first manifested itself in Melissa. She runs to her grandmother and tells her that she knows she is a witch, and that her mother was one too. Now the Circle is in trouble and they are not strong enough or knowledgeable enough to know what to do.

Jane returns to the old house with Cassie just in time to prevent the case from being opened. And she has a crystal! I’m sure that Dawn and Charles don’t know about that. Jane gets the kids to drag the suitcase into the bathtub where they set fire to it and burn the snakes. Apparently, the only way to get rid of them is by fire or drowning. As Jane turns to the kids to try getting the demon out of Melissa, she realizes that it’s not in her anymore, so she uses the crystal to find it. She finds it in Nick, who runs out of the house.

Meanwhile, Dawn meets Charles on his boat and they use her crystal to find the other pieces to it. We find out that there are five pieces of this crystal and when brought together, they can use it to get their powers back, which were stripped from them by the elders. Their conjuring does not work though, and Dawn leaves in disgust. Nick finds her at The Boathouse and reveals that he is the demon she called forth years ago. What?! Dawn has been a naughty witch, hasn’t she?

Since demons need a body to occupy in order to do whatever it is they are there to do, this one wants Dawn’s. As they leave to go to a more private place by the docks, Dawn calls Charles without Nick seeing her. With the open line to Charles, he hears what is going on and runs to the rescue, punching Nick and knocking him out.

This is where it gets very, very sad. Dawn tells Charles they have to drown Nick in order to destroy the demon. I honestly thought that Jane and Cassie would come upon the scene and save Nick, but that doesn’t happen. By the time they get to the dock, Nick is dead and I’m stunned.

The scenes change as we see how this news effects the other kids. The last scene is Faye and Melissa, with Melissa crying in Faye’s arms. I’m crying too, for a few reasons: Nick’s death, Melissa’s heartbreak and Faye’s reaction. She was so saddened and then she had to break the news to her best friend. I love the many layers to Faye. You never know how she is going to act in a situation. When the bullet hits the bone, she is very very real.

I’m wondering, now that the Circle is broken, will they seek to fill that sixth position? Will they get their individual powers back? What will Jane do with this now, knowing that the kids are all practicing magic? Will she tell Dawn and Charles? Speaking of Charles, I found it amazing that he felt so bad over killing Nick, but there was no remorse at killing Amelia.

Jane told Cassie she didn’t know why her mother left Chance Harbor. I thought it was to keep Cassie safe, but there is apparently more to it then that. Why do you think Amelia left? What did you think of “Slither”? Talk to us in the comments below.
