Chris Carter Returning to TV: Why I’m Excited

Chris Carter, the man behind the iconic sci-fi series The X-Files, is returning to television says The Hollywood Reporter. After almost 10 years away, the man who helped FOX move from a joke to a legitimate network is back with a new series called Unique. Few details are known other than that it’s a mystery police thriller with a supernatural element. Oh, and it features a female lead. That last bit is what excites me most.

With The X-Files Carter created a female lead we hadn’t seen before. She was smart, she was grounded, she was a skeptic, but she wasn’t without humanity and emotion. Dana Scully is one of the great fictional characters of all-time, in my opinion, and she was born in a time when women were woefully underrepresented on television. Imagine what he can do now, in an era when some of the best acting, writing, and production in Hollywood are happening on television. When female characters are nuanced, flawed, complicated. When Oscar-caliber actresses are embracing roles on the small screen. This could be amazing.

No pressure, Chris.
