2 BROKE GIRLS: Good Idea Gone Stale

By  |

Episode 3 of 2 Broke Girls was titled “And Strokes of Goodwill”, but it might better have been called “Fresh to Stale in Three Episodes”. I really wanted this show to work, and maybe it’s still trying to find its footing. But as of last night’s showing, I was actually looking for distractions while trying to watch it.

Caroline is still wearing the same outfit she’s worn since the pilot. Wouldn’t it  just be more cost-effective to buy something newer rather than feed the laundry mat daily? After complaining that her feet hurt from wearing those ridiculously high-heeled shoes, Max takes Caroline shopping at the local Goodwill store. What does she buy instead of Sketchers or something that a waitress would wear? Another pair of heels, which she discovers belonged to her at one time before she gave them away after being photographed in them twice. They cost Caroline $800 brand new, but they are marked down to $8. She also finds a pair of designer shorts for $5, and that’s it!

The episode drones on with jokes that are not funny and feel forced, and one particularly long snoozer involving a conversation Max has with Caroline’s horse, Chestnut. Even Oleg and Han added nothing to this episode. In fact, I’ve grown tired of the same old, same old from them. When the girls step out for a few at nearby club, the bartender offers a little change of pace. I hope he comes back because he actually made me look at my TV again.

The girls are still getting used to each other; Max is still learning how to cope with Caroline’s naive openness and Caroline is still digesting her new status as a penniless working girl. By the end of the show, it seemed as though some of Max was finally rubbing off on Caroline when she purposely dumps a bowl of…something all over the chick who was wearing the t-shirt Max was going to buy at Goodwill, but lost when she mistakenly “turned her back on the rack”. We also see Max taking care of Caroline’s horse and setting up a fan so that it cools Caroline as she sleeps. So a bit of Caroline is filtering onto Max.

This show has a lot of potential, and I really want it to succeed, so I hope that things begin to pick up from here on out. Otherwise this Nice Girl is out.
