Pretty Little Liars: “The Devil You Know” Changes the Game

By  |

I know this review is a bit late but it has taken me this long to fully digest what we saw in this week’s Pretty Little Liars episode. “The Devil You Know” has taken us in a whole other direction for the season. We saw a little character flip-flop between Spencer and Emily, a little back story on Jason, Mike’s problem is revealed and the parents are finally eating some crow.

Spencer Gives Up

Upset over her sister’s shock and grief, Spencer decides she want to leave the A issue alone. “Maybe we’re the one’s who are obsessed with A, did you ever think of that?” she says to Emily. Well, for a while there Spencer was the one who couldn’t let things alone. She followed every clue to its bitter and dead end while Aria was wrapped up in Ezra, Hannah was dealing with relationship repair between her dead-beat dad and herself, and Emily trying to figure out a way to remain in Rosewood. Now, Emily takes up the torch and follows clues that lead her to believe that Ian did not kill himself; indeed, may not have killed Alison. We also find out about that cell phone that was dropped into Spencer’s purse at the end of last week’s episode. It was Melissa’s. While Spencer and Melissa are having a tender moment, that phone rings. Yikes! Melissa ends up thinking that Spencer was sending her text messages making them look like they were from Ian. Wait till she finds out Spencer hocked her wedding ring.

What Emily Knows

Something about the suicide/confession note found next to Ian’s body doesn’t ring right for Emily. Something about the way the note was worded reminds Emily of the text messages the girls are constantly receiving from A, and as she begins to dig deeper, she concludes that A has put the note together to make sure Alison’s case is open and shut. She shares her suspicions with Officer Garrett, who tells her he’ll look into it, then calls Jenna and tells her after Emily leaves. What are they up to?

Hannah and Caleb

It looks like these two love-birds are back together, and I for one am really happy. I like Caleb and I think he and Hannah looked cute together. Besides, Hannah needed something good to happen to her. She’s also patched things up with Mona, opting to move on and let bygones be bygones.

Aria and Ezra

These two lovers finally decide to bring their relationship out of the closet, but when the opportunity presents itself at the funeral for Ian, Ezra chokes. Complicating things is Ezra’s ex, who is going to cause trouble for the pair, mark my words.  A disappointed Aria sees Jason sitting in front of Alison’s grave and goes to chat with him. He shocks her by revealing that the night Alison died, he had passed out and had no memory of the night. He woke to find a note in his pocket that read “I know what you did.” All this time he thought he killed Alison. For the love of all that’s good, Aria, dont’ tell him Ian actually did not kill her.

The Game Changer

The OMG of all OMGs came at the end when the girls are once again lured to a meeting place set up by A. This time, it’s the cemetery at Alison’s grave. Projected on a nearby mausoleum is the missing video of Alison and Ian which incriminated Ian in the first place. However, instead of the clip ending with Alison’s hand clawing at the ground, it continues on with her laughing and getting up off the ground to go and give Ian a kiss goodbye. This is why it took me so long to write this review.

The Questions

  • Where and when was Alison killed?
  • Who killed Alison?
  • Who was texting Melissa if Ian had been dead for a week?
  • Who was Jason hiding in his house?
  • Why is Mike stealing things? Klepto?
What do you all think is going on? I’d love to hear your ideas, so add them in the comment section below!
