Does Pretty Little Liars Offer Too Much of a Good Thing?

By  |

I’ve been enjoying Pretty Little Liars since the first thrilling episode aired last year. The twists and turns, those gasp moments, the overall look of the the show keep me coming back week after week. And while I’m glad for its return for a second season, lately I’ve been feeling completely exhausted at the end of each episode. At first I thought that maybe I’m just working particularly hard on Tuesday nights now. But when my oldest daughter came to my house after this week’s episode, “Blinds Dates”, and said to me, “I’m just too tired and confused to figure this out,” I just knew that we couldn’t possibly be the only two people feeling this way. I was right.

Don’t get me wrong, I still love the show and the mysterious ‘A’, but I’m wondering if maybe they are throwing too many mysteries into the show now. I feel like I’m being crammed full of twist and questions but never given the opportunity of gaining any ground with resolutions. We’re not even given a crumb, or at least not one that we can trust, because when we are given that tiny answer to a question, it is immediately thrown into doubt by another character or another storyline.

At the end of last season, Ian attacks Spencer after confessing to her that he killed Allison, but that it was an accident. Then he falls and apparently dies. Now we find out that Ian was still alive and we’re not sure anymore if he really did kill Allison or if he’s just covering up for someone else. Say, the one who pushed him? We don’t know.

‘A’ seems to be everywhere, know everything the girls are going to do before they do it, and appears to have a lot of money. I’m sorry, but there is no way on this earth that one person can be doing all the things being done to our girls. ‘A’ is always right there when he/she sends out the eerie text messages; watching them the whole time. How is ‘A’ not caught yet? And there are way too many suspects, and none of them are being ruled out. I would think that by now, we’d be a bit further along in finding out who ‘A’ is.

As if there weren’t enough going on, let’s bring back Allison’s brother, Jason. What? Why? Where has he been all this time and what brings him back to Rosewood? Aria and her pink hair? I think not.

Hannah’s estranged father suddenly puts in an appearance as well. Again, why? To add more suspects or to further muck-up the parental issues riddled throughout this show? We don’t know.

I love a good mystery just as much as the next Christie buff, but there comes a time when we the viewers rise up a cry “Enough! Give us some answers that will stick!” Throw too much at us for the fun of confusing us and holding our interest, and we will lose interest rapidly. It gets to a point where you much too confused and turned around that you just give up in futility. I’m nearing that point and it kind of makes me sad because I really love this show. But I’m just getting too darn tired to follow. So I have to ask, when is it going to be enough? Where has the line been drawn and please, are we anywhere near to it?
