An inside look at Ally Walker’s explosive and controversial role on “Sons of Anarchy”

In a recent interview with NiceGirlsTV, Ally Walker shared what it is like portraying one of the most intense roles of her career.  On Sons of Anarchy, Ally portrays Agent June Stahl, a Stockton-based agent for Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives; and her primary assignment is the investigation of the Sons of Anarchy motorcycle club.

Ally is the first to admit that she thinks her character is certifiably crazy.  While it was not clear from the start, as the show peeled back the layers of her character, each layer revealed a bit more of the turbulent core hidden beneath.  In fact, even Ally had no clue the depths of insanity that were lurking beneath the carefully constructed façade which June hides behind.

When first hired to work on Sons of Anarchy, Ally was initially under the impression that she would make a quick appearance for three episodes and then be gone.  But three years later, June is even more fully integrated into the show than ever.  Despite the unexpected turn, Ally has enjoyed portraying June.  She has found it is easy to play “crazy” because there is no internal struggle.  Thus, the ease of slipping into such an outrageous character has been plain fun for Ally — a chance of a lifetime to embrace the dark side.

What keeps Ally firmly tethered in her own reality opposed to being overshadowed by June’s dark spirit is the fact that she is a mom and has her kids and husband to go home to — that above anything keeps her level-headed and her self-identity unmarred by June’s psychotic spiral.

Despite June’s tendency to go to extremes, Ally would not change one thing about June. Though, if she could, Ally would like to stimulate June’s conscious.  A prick of humanity and sense of repercussions would not be a bad thing for June for which to feel the weight.  Without restraint, inhibition and moral dilemma, June is a wildcard. She is also fearless.  She will do anything because she feels what she does is right. June is the perfect foil, and she is a survivor. No matter how intense, hair-raising or terrifying the situation or obstacle, she meets it head on.

Trying to ascertain what exactly drove June from law-abiding crusader to obsessed sociopath over the course of three seasons, Ally felt that June’s ego had simply gotten in her way.  Power is extremely seductive and June was seduced by her own evil ambition.  As a result, her crusade against the Sons of Anarchy has eclipsed everything else in her life and it consumes her.   If anything, Ally would like to see June get a taste of humanity.  June has lost her moral compass and cannot sense where the boundaries are anymore; and, in the end, the Sons of Anarchy world is not something that June will ever leave.  What started out as just an assignment has become a way of life for her.  She cannot envision, nor does she desire, a life beyond it.

For Ally, the role has been an unexpectedly rewarding opportunity.  She enjoys portraying such a complex and morally ambiguous character.  It has been a fantastic journey discovering what drives June and what she will do next.

In addition, Ally described being a part of the Sons of Anarchy cast akin to working amongst Robin Hood and all his merry men.  The show may be a drama, but it is also quirky and funny.  It has been an adventure and Ally feels blessed to be a part of it.

Looking to the future, no matter what lies in store for Agent June Stahl, Ally is thrilled to be working on the pilot for Lifetime entitled Exit 19; and while it remains to be seen if the show gets picked up, Ally would love the chance to have her own show again.

In the meantime, the fate of June may or may not be in the balance.  With three more episodes scheduled to air in this season, there may be a twist ahead.  Tune in and find out if June survives to see the fourth season.  Sons of Anarchy airs Tuesday nights at 10/9c on FX.
