Summer Season Finales: Haven

By  |

As the summer season is now officially over, Syfy’s new summer series Haven wraps its first season on Friday, October 8th. “Haven” is a series loosely based on Stephen King’s short story “The Colorado Kid.” Building on the story’s premise of a town afflicted with supernatural occurrences, Haven focuses on the town of Haven, Maine where a sudden string of unexplainable supernatural events begin to occur.

Haven comes to Syfy July 9FBI Agent Audrey Parker (Emily Rose) is initially assigned to find out what is going on in Haven, but after discovering a personal connection – a photo of a woman who may be her biological mother taken 27 years ago – Audrey decided to remain in Haven. Additionally, due to Audrey’s unusual insight and sympathy for the supernaturally afflicted, or “troubled” as they say in Haven, she has a knack for uncovering who or what is behind the mysterious incidents.

Over the course of the season, the series took a turn from the weekly creature-feature type episodes, each focusing on a person with special abilities who uses their special abilities to wreak havoc on the town of Haven, to exploring the over-arcing mystery. Aided by local police deputy Nathan Wournos (Lucas Bryant), his father Chief Wournos (Nicholas Campbell) and the notorious local smuggler Duke Crocker (Eric Balfour), Audrey inches closer and closer to drawing a net on whatever may be causing the inhabitants of Haven to suddenly manifest supernatural abilities – or in the case of some of the townsfolk, a re-emergence of a long-buried special ability.

During a particularly surprising episode involving a shape-shifter (“As You Were”), it was revealed that Audrey’s physical touch is something that Nathan can feel. This revelation was shocking as Nathan is afflicted with a condition where he cannot feel anything – or anyone. The discovery that he was not cut-off from the rest of the world by the lack of human touch brought out a funny, and touchingly romantic-side of the previously detached Deputy. It was also the first clue that Audrey may have a deeper connection to Haven than just an old photo of a woman who may be her mother.

In last week’s episode “Resurfacing,” Audrey made two startling discoveries: (1) she was able to touch a man who was trapped in an alternate dimension – she held him here just long enough to say good-bye to his family; and (2) Audrey had a scar on her foot that resembled the scar that her mother sustained 27 years ago. It has led to speculation that Audrey’s “mother” may in fact be Audrey herself – though how that would be possible has not yet been explained.

As the first season concludes, it will be fascinating to find out if Audrey is the same woman in the photo from so long ago and if Audrey can track down the source of the “troubles” plaguing Haven.

Be sure to tune in and watch the dramatic first season conclusion of Haven on Friday, October 8th at 10/9c on Syfy.
