“Burn Notice” Still Bringing the Fire

Burn Notice returns tonight to finish out its second season, and I have to tell you, don’t expect things to continue on in that familiar way you’ve come to expect from this show. Sure, Michael is still going to work cases and Sam will still go along with him, albeit a bit grudgingly at times, and Fiona will still be turned on by “things that go boom”. But there’s a different flavor to the show. Here we are, half way through the second season, and it still feels fresh and new.
**Mild Spoilers**
The show begins with Michael regaining consciousness after the explosion that nearly killed him. Sam is there to take him somewhere safe, which is not going to happen without a cool car chase. The chase causes considerable damage to Sam’s Caddy, and as he has a moment of silence to grieve, Michael spots a guy trying to throw himself in front of a bus.
We learn that the man, Kenny, is distraught over his little boy, Jack, who has a heart condition he needs treated or he will not survive. But Kenny was scammed by some people who promised that with $250,000 he could buy meds that will save his boy’s life. The meds were no good and, in fact, made Jack worse. Michael decides to take the Kenny’s case, but Sam doesn’t like it and argues. Here, we see a Michael that is a little lost. This case seems to be a sort of life line for him. He tells Sam he needs to take this case. I would go so far as to say that Michael seemed to be showing vulnerability we haven’t seen before.
In true, Burn Notice fashion, a plan is devised to catch the scam artists. These are always fun to watch because it is often during these plots that the humor comes through. However, this time, the plan goes wrong. Oddly enough, it is Fiona who trips up because her emotions got the best of her. Fiona got pissed!
Michael decides on a course of action that Sam, again, disagrees with, but this time, he’s not giving into Michael. It seems that suddenly, nothing is going right for Michael. His life as, as it was, is once again turned upside down and he doesn’t know where he fits in or what to do about it. Clearly, Sam had the stronger arm throughout most of this episode.
To find out how all this turns out, you’ll have to tune in and watch for yourself. This episode sets up some glimpses into how the rest of the season will play out, and, perhaps, give us a peek into season three (?). You be the judge.
