In the Seuss tale, The Lorax “speaks for the trees” in a desperate effort to save his beloved “Truffula” forest from extinction. Arch enemy of the Truffula tree and its ambrosial fruit is the “Once-ler” who covets the trees as the perfect material from which to manufacture his marvelous invention, the “Thneed,” defined as “a fine something that all people need!” When the ecological crisis becomes catastrophic, the one tiny surviving hope is a seed placed in the hands of a small boy.
