Casting Begins for Dollhouse

Ausiello at TV Guide has news about some of the first characters to be cast on Dollhouse, including a Battlestar Galactica alum:

Joss Whedon is letting his obsession with Battlestar Galactica get the best of him — and I couldn’t be happier about it!

Whedon has tapped Galactica stud Tahmoh Penikett (aka Helo) to play Eliza Dushku’s “twisted romantic foil” in Dollhouse, a spokesperson for Twentieth Television confirms. Also joining the Dollhouse ensemble are Fran Kranz (CBS’ Welcome to the Captain), Aussie actress Dichen Lachman and relative newcomer Enver Gjokaj.

Penikett’s character, Paul Smith (originally named Paul Ballard), is described as an FBI agent who becomes obsessed with both the urban myth that is Dollhouse and its most recognizable inhabitant, Echo (Dushku).

Kranz, meanwhile, has been cast as Dollhouse’s nerdy programmer Topher Brink, the dude responsible for imprinting the dolls. Lachman, who starred in the Australian series Neighbours, will play Sierra, a Doll similar to Echo, only not as self aware. And last but not least, Gjokaj will play Echo’s buddy Victor, a handsome Doll who is childlike when inactive and everything from Errol Flynn to a young De Niro when he’s active.

Buffy Alum Coming to ‘Dollhouse’?

Ausiello over at TV Guide just posted the news that Joss has read with some people from the Buffyverse for roles in Dollhouse:

Eliza Dushku may be bunking with some old friends when she moves into Joss Whedon’s Dollhouse next season. According to multiple sources, several Buffyverse grads are being considered for the eight supporting roles now being cast.

Whedon confirmed this unbelievably fraktacular turn of events moments before taking the stage at Paley Fest’s Buffy tribute last Thursday. “I’ve read a couple of people [from the Buffyverse],” he told me, “but I’m not going to say who.”

Although this would seem to contradict comments the Buffy master made to me last fall, in which he said that his “first instinct is to probably [cast] new people because I’m already reuniting with Eliza and I don’t want it to seem like a house party,” Whedon insists his position hasn’t changed.

“It’s not a hard and fast rule,” clarifies the auteur, who just completed penning Dollhouse’s one-hour premiere. “I just want to make sure I get the right people. And I don’t want to give the impression that it’s just me and my friends having a party. Some [Buffyverse alums] might work out fine. But I’m not going to just seek out people that I already know are great. That would be lazy.”

You know what I say? There’s nothin’ wrong with being lazy if it means Whedon reuniting with the likes of James Marsters, Charisma Carpenter and Julie Landau. Of course, that’s not to say they’re the Buffyverse vets in the running for Dollhouse. That’s not to say they aren’t either. See how I protected myself there?

What Buffyverse stars would you like to see populate Dollhouse? Or do you think Whedon should trust his first instinct and surround Dushku with newbies? Those are the questions that need answering. By you. Below.

TV Addict Interviews Robert Buckley

Fans of NBC’s Lipstick Jungle have completely fallen for Robert Buckley, aka Kirby Atwood, aka Nico’s hotter-than-hot man-on-the-side. He has charm, charisma, and isn’t hard to look at! In celebration of Lipstick Jungle’s first season finale, the TV Addict spent some time chatting with Rob about the show, where he wants to see his character go, and the real reason he was upset that the writers went on strike.

I want to just start by saying that I have completely gotten hooked on the show in recent weeks, and I really like your character.
Robert Buckley:
Oh thank you! It’s funny. I told everyone, all my friends who started watching it, stick with the show because it really picks up momentum. I think we’re seeing it now, a lot more people are tuning in and getting wrapped up in the storyline.

They’ve really started to flesh out the characters and you learn more about the characters that have been on the screen. I’m excited at the prospect of more episodes to come.
Hopefully so, we have the season finale, and we’ll know shortly if we’re coming back for a season 2.

A New Joss Musical: Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog

While we eagerly await Dollhouse, Joss just ‘fessed up to his next project, Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog:

So…..
The bag is catless.

During the strike I started writing a musical intended as a limited internet series, 3 episodes of approximately 10 minutes each. Writing with me was my brother Jed, his fiancee Maurissa, and my other brother Zack. To my shock and surprise, we finished it. To my greater shock and surprise, we managed (with the help of many people I’ll be praising at length soon) to drag it into preproduction (yes, just as DOLLHOUSE was given a start date two months away and all my comics were due.) And today, after a grueling week of writing everything ever while trying to be a producer, I got to start shooting. A musical.

This much I will say: It’s the story of a low-rent super-villain, the hero who keeps beating him up, and the cute girl from the laundromat he’s too shy to talk to. And I’m having the time of my life.

“DOCTOR HORRIBLE’S SING-ALONG BLOG”
Neil Patrick Harris…..as Dr. Horrible
Nathan Fillion……….as Captain Hammer
Felicia Day………….as Penny

And a cast of Dozens!
Coming soon.

Lindsay Price on Rachael Ray

Lindsay Price (Victory Ford) appeared on Rachael Ray’s show yesterday, talking about the early days of her career (Toys ‘R’ Us!), and Lindsay jokes how things have come full circle as far as acting with her idols goes. “I grew up watching Pretty in Pink and being in love with Andrew McCarthy,” she admits. Rachael exclaims, “Hello! And now you’re making out with him!” A blushing Lindsay responds, “I know, it’s kind of amazing! He just sparkles. I mean, nobody plays a millionaire like him.”

When it comes to two of her other co-stars, Brooke Shields and Kim Raver, Lindsay explains that the three of them have such great chemisty, but sometimes things can get a little out of control on the set. Watch the video to hear Lindsay reveal how she fell victim to one of their practical jokes.

Fain, Craft Talk Dollhouse

DollhouseTV.net was fortunate enough to attend a Q&A session with Sarah Fain and Elizabeth Craft last night in their hometown of Kansas City. Most of the discussion centered around their work on Angel, The Shield, Women’s Murder Club, and their young adult books – Bass Akwards & Belly Up, and the forthcoming sequel, Footfree & Fancyloose. However, we did get a chance to ask them a couple of questions about Dollhouse as well.

When asked about being there at the beginning of a show, helping to launch rather than coming after the series was well on its way (they joined Angel and The Shield during each show’s fourth season), they expressed excitement about being involved in everything from casting to gathering the production crew to envisioning the sets.

“Joss [Whedon] has an amazing vision for the sets in The Dollhouse,” said Fain.

We also learned that production on the pilot episode begins April 23 in Los Angeles, and that the recent script pages released for casting earlier this week were written solely by Joss. Fain and Craft will return to work on the show Monday.

Ausiello Scoops Dollhouse

Question: I’m dying for more Dollhouse scoop! BTW, I loved the story you and Ben Katner did pitching actors for the show.— Kacey
Ausiello: I’ll be curious to see if Joss takes any of our suggestions. I’m sure it’s a long shot, especially in light of what he told me back in November when Dollhouse was just announced. “My first instinct is to probably [cast] new people [in Dollhouse], because I’m already reuniting with Eliza and I don’t want it to seem like a house party,” he said. “I want to make sure people get a fresh feeling from it. But behind the scenes, I will be chasing many writers that I have worked with before because they’re the people I trust.” Hence Whedon’s decision to snap up former Angel scribes Elizabeth Craft and Sarah Fain the moment they parted ways with Women’s Murder Club.

Focus on Andrew McCarthy

The folks at the TV Squad have a nice article posted on Andrew McCarthy, who plays Joe Bennett.

While the casting for the ladies to play the power brokers on NBC’s Lipstick Jungle was imperative, no less attention was paid for the men with whom those women would be romantically entwined. For the character of Joe Bennett, the enigmatic, high-powered, complicated Prince Charming with a dark side, producers had to be looking for just the right combination of sexual appeal and sensitive undercurrent. They found the right guy when Andrew McCarthy was cast. The former Brat Packer could be the find of the TV season; the new McDreamy. Read more

SPOILERS: Dollhouse Episode 1.01

Pilot
Airdate: ???

Adelle meets with a Client and lays out the rules of the program: no harm may come to an Active, and the Active must not be told that he or she is “working” but must believe that what they are doing is as real as they think it is.

Boyd, one of the handlers, and Topher, one of the programmers, watch as a group of “Dolls” eat lunch together for the third time in a week. This “grouping” behavior is noteworthy because it would seem to indicate that they remember each other, that their memories are not, in fact, wiped clean. And it appears Echo is the the instigator.

We also learn from their conversation that the “Dolls” volunteered to be a part of this project for five years, at the end of which they will have no memory of what they did during those five years and walk away wealthy people. Boyd has some moral issues with this concept, but Topher argues that everyone is “programmed” whether they realize it or not.

Someone named Alpha tortures someone named Paul who, it appears, has been working with Alpha to bring down the Dollhouse until he decided to hold out for a better offer. Alpha and Paul are both specifically interested in Echo who they think may be evolving past the programming.

Through a series of vignettes, we see Sierra as a blank doll with stilted understanding and conversation; programmed as a badass safecracker; and a razor-sharp socialite.

We discover that Adelle (posing as Katherine) is having an affair with Victor.
